SB800 Flash in combination with other studio light I recently bought a Nikon D80 and prior to this used a Nikon N80 which I loved. I have a little studio setup utilizing a Vivitar slave unit with small umbrella. Since I didn't have a cord for the N80 flash unit, I mounted it on my camera and tilted the flash backward such that it wouldn't flash on my subject, but would cause my slave to flash. THis worked. Once I got my D80, I used the N80 flash unit (even though I know its not the right flash for the camera), but it still worked with the slave and the pics were good. Now I just bought the SB800...and I still don't have a cord for the unit...so I thought it would work in the same manner but I am having difficulty. Its either underexposed if I set the flash straight up, or overexposed if I set it as a bounce with the slave. I have the flash set to TTL, the white balance on the camera set to flash... Any suggestions on how I can get it to work with the umbrellas??

Used with the D80 the SB800 default setting is for i-TTL, which fires a pre-flash for metering before the shutter opens. This pre-flash is triggering your slave to fire too soon. You will need to set the SB800 for either Non-TTL Auto or Manual to use it this way.

Jon has given you the right advise. But, another thing to consider is that sync cords are really not expensive. what type of lights do you have? and I see no Sync port on the D80 looking at it's specs, This is the same as the D70. If so you will need a cheap part called a AS-15, you can find this on ebay eaisily. Heres a Link for you: http://cgi.ebay.com/NIKON-AS-15-Hot-Shoe-Adapter_W0QQitemZ220110874179QQihZ012QQcategoryZ64354QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I hope this helps,
