Photography Question

Deborah Liperote

30D or 5D

Okay guys. I am getting ready to go for it again. I already have a 30D but really want a backup camera for weddings. I just purchased a new lens 24-70 2.8L and I am definitely buying the 70-200 2.8 IS L in the next 24 hours. I already have 580 ex and will be purchasing another one with purchase of camera. I have 50mm 1.4
28-135 IS (sucks)very slow and broke all the time.. I got a lemon and they just keep fixing it. I want it replaced!
Okay help me out and tell my why I should spend $2700 instead of $1100. I know the crop factor already so you don't need to go there. Why will the 5D make my photos better than 30D.

  Okay Deborah –

I own the 5D and consider it the best camera I have ever used. What made me select this camera were: full size sensor; extremely fast shutter speed; exceptionally long battery life (well, I did not know this at the time, but have been happy to discover that the battery holds power much longer than any other camera I’ve used); large and easy to see LCD; rugged exterior of the camera box (important to me since I do most of my shooting outside and often in nasty weather). I did look at the 20D and read about the, then unavailable 30D. The 5D simply seemed more likely to fit my needs. I bought it when it was fairly new and paid almost $3500 (American Dollars) for the camera. The price has come down, at least around where I live. I’ve never been sorry that I spent the money and feel that I made the right decision.

Will a better camera, with more features and better available glass (Canon glass is still considered some of the top in the world) make you a better photographer? I really believe that it is the person behind the lens that makes an image and that no matter how good the camera, with the skills necessary to make a great image, nothing else matters. At the same time, I’ve found that my images have improved since I started using this camera. The reason, IMO, is because I’ve become serious about my photography and have worked much harder to develop my skills. The 5D offers me more control, but also challenges me to learn more. This has been my experience, but I cannot speak for anyone else. Ultimately, the choice of camera comes down to what feels right in your hands and what you believe you need to accomplish what you hope to accomplish.

I have a frine d who purchased the 5d when I purchased the 30d. they are very similar in looks! same shutter life and made with same construction. they have almost the same options in menu. so I just am having a deilema. how much more is the mega pixel an issue. that's debatable. I realize it doesn't make you a better photographer but what I am asking is comparing apples to apples in my ability how will the 5d improve my image quality vs 30D.

Who Me?
The 5D focusses more accurately, large viewfinder and better quality pictures. Go to a camera store and do a test on both and you will buy the 5D.

I think this may be a tough thing for anyone else to advise you about. Unfortunately, I have never used the 30D – it was not out when I purchased my 5D – so I cannot offer any intelligent opinion about its value. You already do some amazingly good photography, so I doubt if the choice of a camera is going to make a huge difference. Also, since it appears as if you do mostly studio/wedding/portrait work, what works for me may not be the same for you. As I said, I love my 5D and feel that it offers me everything and more that I will need in the foreseeable future.

Do you have access to a good camera shop where they would allow you to handle each camera, maybe even taking a few pictures and seeing how the cameras handles. My favorite shop allowed me to take both the 20D and 5D for a “test drive”. I shot about ten images with each camera and then came back to the store and we uploaded the images onto the store computer. I did notice that the 5D gave me sharper results, but I really had to look hard. The 5D does have a full size sensor, higher effective resolution and higher recording resolution. I think that this results in sharper images with less noise. Yet, I have read reviews that claim that these factors are not as important as I think they are. Keep in mind that the 5D is listed as a pro camera and the 30D as a pro-sumer camera. IMO, this is fairly meaningless and more a factor for someone who thinks that a pro brand will make them a pro – something I am certain you do not think! Have you checked B&H yet? They offer a comparison feature that will allow you to compare each camera side by side, feature by feature. Hopefully, someone who has used both cameras will respond to your post and offer you more insight from first hand experience.

I have a friend who has the 5D and when we got together with them they look identical! the view finder is same size. and the comment irene made is the type of answer im looking for. will it focus better than the 30d... I do have focusing issues to a slight degree. and will the 5d render sharper images. which thankyou irene for your comments. ooppsss sorry justin I just read yours thank you for yours also. I am leaning towards the 5d but I needed help justifying the extra cash!!!! Tahnks Justin on my other thread as well. how do you like the 24-70 2.8L ? I'm excited about it and I plan on leaving it on my 30D while I put the 70-200 2.8 is L on my 5d.

Don't buy before you've actually tried! For yourself!

Justin's advice is spot-on. Go to a place where they sell both, take 2 empty CF cards, and your charged 580EX, ask if you can make comparative photos, stick a CF card in each camera and shoot the same dozen exposures with each. Take home the CF cards and compare results at your leisure. On YOUR PC. In YOUR software. Side-by-side on YOUR screen.

Make your OWN decision. Don't spend hundreds on the basis of other people's comments and opinions. They don't have to live with your purchase. You do! So make your OWN decision. Based on your OWN real-life test.

Especially if you're a pro!

Of course you shoot RAW+JPG with each camera.
Head-to-head. Empirical research.

Good luck.
