buying a digital camera after a stroke

I am looking to buy a digital camera that is easy to use & for travel. I have had a stroke & can not handle my Canon Digital Rebel 300 EOS. Am concerned about my shaking & the weight tires me out. Also the quality after being used to the SLR camera. Also I like the zoom on my 75-300mm lens before stroke.
Thanks for any advice!

You might want to look at the Canon S3IS. It is more compact and much lighter than the Digital Rebel. The optical zoom lens is the equivalent of a 36-432mm.

It also has built-in Image Stabilization that works very well.

My wife has the S2IS, and the quality is very good, though not quite as good at the Digital Rebel. It is a 5MP, though, and the S3IS has a newer 6MP sensor. So I would assume that the quality has improved a bit.

One drawback is that the built-in flash, like all built-in flashes, has its limitations. And there is no hotshoe for adding a stronger flash.

Good luck,

Chris Vedros

  Lmommy,
Did your stroke affect your right side? I also had a stoke 18 months ago and it affected my right side. Luckily I have recovered pretty well. I have the XTi and an image stabilizer lens which helps tremendously.
Maybe you could try the IS lenses and see if that helps.

  Have you considered a monopod?

Monopod is a good idea, but really limits your creative ability and spontaneous pics you may want to take on the spur of the moment. Good thought though Dennis!

For travel I sometimes take a Nikon S4. small and light fits in my shirt pocket 6 MP with a 10x zoom zoom. Eqiovalemt to 38 - 380mm. Plus it has a 4x digital zoom that reaches out to 1520mm. Niknon lens 12 elements in 4 groups. No manual mode no viewfinder.
Shutter is 2 sec. - 1/1000 - max apature is f/3.5 close focus 1.6".
ISO 50 - 400
Neat swivl lens. Worth looking at.

I like it becasue it runs on 2 AA batteris. On long tips I take two or three 1M SM cards. and load it with lithiums good for 450 shots.

The newer model is the S10 it requires recharables but has some form of image stablization.

Monopod may sound good at first, but she'll have to carry it. If she gets tired with a rebel, she'll get tired with a monopod.
I think a point and shoot like the one Chris Vedros brought up is something she'd have to use.

  Thanks all!
1st my Husband had to tell me what a monopod was - I can't believe I didn't know ;-(. I still walk with a cane my balance is not what it used to be, so I don't think thats an option, unless I could let the monopod double as my cane??? Well, I am a little slow now but I have tried to check out all who respondeds pictures & cameras. Wow, ya'll all have great pics! I propably was not even in ya'lls class even before my stroke. Chris - since you have the exact camera I would like to know a couple of settings you used on your pics. I also was floored by seeing my old neighborhood school. I grew up in Gretna, LA. My cousin went to Blenk H.S. I would love to have a copy of St. Louis Cathedral. Well still need to check out more suggestions. Anymore suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lmommy

Wal*Mart Monipod at camera dept. doubles as a cane. Took one to Europe - only one person (guard) at Sistine Chapel bugged me. It worked out fine.

Canon has raised the bar again. Click HERE for a press release of the new Canon S5IS. (I'm not sure why they skipped over S4) The new version is 8MP, has the Digic III processor, a larger LCD screen, and the flash hotshoe that was missing from earlier models. Looks like a very impressive set of features for a compact camera.

Lmommy - so you're a local girl, huh? I grew up on Gretna Blvd, a block down the street from Blenk HS. Click on my contact link to send me a private email. If you give me your mailing address, I'll send you a print of the St. Louis Cathedral.

Feel free to ask me any questions about settings used for my images and I'll share what I know.
