  Hi Brianna,
Light, in about the same range as human vision, although extending a little farther into the ultraviolet. Heat, and probably X-rays, cosmic rays and other kinds of radioactivity will cause it to record exposure. It can certainly be damaged by moisture, and there are other chemicals it is sensitive to. All of this refers to unexposed film. Exposed film can be damaged by solvents and plasticizers. It is extremely easy to scratch.
Thanks,
John Siskin

  Hi Brianna,
All modern systems that reproduce color images whether film, digital, TV, scanner, or electrostatic are based on what we call the trochromatic principle. This principle is modeled from the anatomy of the human eye. We know from experiment and discovery that human color vision is based on presence of specialized light sensitive cells in a region of our eye known as the retina. These cells have a distinctive shape, they resemble an ice cream cone, thus they are called cone cells. We have discovered that the cone cells contain a pigment that allow them to be stimulated by a specific color of light. There are three pigments, one for red light, and one for green light and one specific for blue light.

Thus all devices we make that photograph or copy or scan to reproduced images of colored objects (scenes), are made sensitive (caused to react to) what we call the three primary colors red – green – blue. While it is true that films and chips and the like are also sensitive to other radiant energies, general imaging depends mainly on exposure by the three primary colors.

  Alan,
Good answer, but I don't think that will fit in the blank on her quiz. ;-)

  Hi Chris,
I could just hand out answers on a silver platter however I believe giving more information hopeful that it will spark students to lean a little more than the bare minimum. Who knows where that will lead? I am retired but I take pride knowing that many of my former students are in manufacturing designing the tools and materials of our trade.
