more flash or a low light lens? So after shooting some weddings I have come to the realization that shooting in low light settings in a larger area have become not to my liking. I am finding that in dim light situations like a first dance it is hard to get ideal lighting even with the flash. I mean I notice the flash is only good for a certain radius of the photo. I am currently only using 430ex flash and the lens i'm using for most of the pictures is a 24-70mm 2.8L canon lens. Is the 580ex flash unit a stronger flash for something like this or should I use both flash units using a hotshoe. The 3rd option i'm looking at is buying a 85mm 1.8 lens for situations like this to try to make life a littler easier....

Did you include two pics with your question, my browser is showing two empty boxes above your question with no pictures in them. Anyway, have you not by chance set the flash exposure compensation to -1, -2? Maybe try a + compensation and bounce off ceiling or large white area. I have the 430ex and most of the time go +1 or +1.5 when bouncing off large white surfaces. Do a test and listen to your flash fire during auto mode. Then switch your flash to manual say 1/1 and then hear it fire. You will get an idea of the power of the gun at full capacity, the picture might also be totally over exposed. Going for a faster lens will narrow down the DOF even more. I use my f2.8 lens at f4 or 5.6 in most of my portraits to maintain DOF.

Kevin, Just for an idea; I recently purchased the Nikkor 50mm 1.8D prime. With crop factor, it behaves like a 75mm. For $120 bucks, this little gem blows me away! There are plenty of reviews and specs on it all over the net. Pete
