Protecting Photos on the Web

Hi there,

I feel sick knowing the photos that are on my webpage can be copied, other than putting a manual watermark on each photo, how do I enable the right click, I have no idea about html coding, and in each gallery (where photos are) there is no option to type text or html coding. I think I will have to remove all the photos, put a watermark on them and then re-add.

Any ideas......

The website offers a watermark themselves, but it repeats itself all over the photograph making them difficult to view.

Thanks a million
Nat

Natalie, the right click thing means little when anyone can just snag a screen copy. I feel the only way to discourage anyone from copying your photos is to have a physical watermark right on the photo, large and prominently.

In addition to what I just posted, I feel pretty sick about it as well. I have never put a watermark on any of my entries but have been considering that more seriously in light of recent happenings.

Who Me?
The operator is available, ask her.

I don't know how to because my web designer does that for me. Maybe you should hire someone a little more computer savy. When shooting weddings you have to factor all that stuff in. Don't just collect what will make you happy, you also collect for the business. Advertising in the mags, on the net, upgrades in equipment and software and a occasional lawyer here and there, hair, nails , clothing, travel, worshops, business cards, labs etc...

Who Me?
What happened recently Sharon? I must have been on vacation.

I emailed you, Justin. Wouldn't want Natalie's thread to get hijacked.

BTW Natalie, some time ago I printed a bunch of 4x6" prints from the files I use to upload to BP. They printed out just fine at 4x6". If I were doing weddings I don't think I would display my photos online without the watermark. Just a thought.

Thanks everyone.

  Natalie,

How about uploading nothing more than 72 DPI or less? At least the hijackers won't be making enlargements.

Pete

Natalie, what is it you are trying to aviod. Determining that is important.

Essetially, anything on the web, no matter what technology you try to use, can be taken. The smaller the file, the harder it is to print. And, there are watermarks that aren't really attached to the file, so be careful. The only SURE way is to watermark yourself in Photoshop.

My stuff is all over the place, but I've never seen anything that was mine, where someone else was taking credit. And, usually, it's just a direct link from their website to the image on my server. I'm cool with that.

Image theft is rampant, and it's getting worse everyday. All you can do is reduce your risk by putting a watermark on a prominent part of the photo, so it can't be cropped off, and do the best you can with technology.

Also, make sure that you actually copyright your images. If something happens, and you have not registered your images with the US Copyright office (assuming you are US-based), the courts will NOT support you. Having your images filed with the US Copyright office is one-step in a huge battle.

The other thing to consider, is that if someone does steal your image, what is the real damage. You may not like it, but the courts are going to want you to quantify the loss. Many times with photography, there is no loss. It's an infringement, but so what? There's no real harm done, in the end.

Take the steps to protect your work as best you can, realizing that there are those who can get to it if they want to.

But, really, it's no big deal. People can break into your home in about 3 seconds regardless of your security system. But, you don't go freaking out about that all the time. You just lock your door when you leave, and that's it.
