Ultra telephoto for Maxxum 5D or switch cameras

I use a Maxxum 5D with a 28 - 300 lens for nature photography but want an ultra zoom for a trip to Alaska. I purchased a Sigma 50 - 500 but the 5D did not recognize the lens. (Defective lens maybe) My daughter thinks I should just start over with a Nikon D 40 or D 80. Any advice. Has anyone had good success with an ultrazoom lens with a Maxxum 5D?

  Joyce,

I have the Sigma 50-500; but, shoot Nikon. The lense is a good lense. Have you tried cleaning the contacts? I did a quick search to see if there had been any problems with the two paired together and didn't come up with anything. When you say it didn't recognize the lense exactly what did it do or not do? Did you take the creep lock off?

The camera just said "no lens attached" creep lock on or off. I even called sigma directly and they were of no help. Since I had to purchase via mail from NY (I'm in SC) I did not care to "exchange" and go through the process again. So I'm looking to see if anyone has had success with an ultra zoom lens with a Maxxum 5D. It's not a popular camera but I love mine.
