Canon vs Nikon: Better Lens?

I've been trying to decide between the Nikon D80 and the Canon Rebel xti for a few months, and I still can't decide.
I've checked out the cameras-and the next level of camera above them. After holding both cameras it only made me more confused! I think the Nikon might be a little too big for my hands, but I just don't know. Does anybody have any suggestions? I want to factor in the next level camera-d80 to d200 etc-in my decision. I've heard the quality of nikon lenses is great, but any thoughts on the canons? It's been a long time since I've been in the slr arena and this will be the first time with the digitals-so any help is appreciated :)

Wow Christen,...I'm amazed that this questioned remained for so long without creating a firestorm.
The Nikon vs. Canon debate has been waging for decades.
Each side has valid arguments as to which is better but the bottom line remains the same:
They're both good,...AND they can both be bad.

What this means is that both Nikon (Nikkor) and Canon manufacture prime lenses with superior optics. They both also market a line of lesser quality zooms and/or "kit" lenses for those who think that good enough is OK...or for those whose budgetary restraints might have them looking toward the generics.

Just remember that it's the LENS (...along with your own degree of knowledge and technique) that makes a good picture great so buy the very best you can afford.

It also pays to determine before you amass a plethora of lenses if they will indeed be compatible with your intended upgrades.

Bob

I have a Nikon (not the one you are looking at) and have never owned a Canon but I would have to say that, based on what you said about the size of the Nikon, that the Canon may be a better choice for you. As far as which has the better lenses, I agree with Bob. Both make good lenses and both make cheap lenses (gotta feed the market). As far as the overall quality of each line, I don't think you could go wrong with either. Base your choice on the body you want and then pick the best lens you can afford from that line.
