Photography Question

Photograph about 1918-1922

I don't have a problem with images, but there was no category to fit my question. I came into posession of my parent's wedding photo (wed between 1918 and 1920). When you look at the picture, their wedding bands are on the right hand, but when you put the picture in front of you and look in the mirror, their rings are on the left hand as it should be. In those years, was photograph filmed in reverse? If so, what was the process called? Our family is waiting for the answer.

There was no significant difference in photo processing in 1918. Undoubtably, the negative was flipped when making the print, either by accident or maybe the photographer thought the aesthetics of the composition were better with positions of the bride and groom reversed.

  Hi Regina,

This is a true story.

In the early fifties I worked after high school for the town photographer. One day an elderly lady came into the shop. She produced a crumpled up wallet size picture of her late husband. She told us this was the only picture of him. The image was a distance shot of a man in overcoat and hat. The lady wanted a large framed over-mantel. My boss accepted the assignment. Searching city and county records he located several ID pictures which we borrowed and I made copy negatives. Double exposing several I made a large print that was a combination of images. As was the practice in those days a “tinted print” was made by painting over the photo using transplant and heavy oil colors. After mounting and framing a call was made and the lady came to pick up the masterpiece. She cried and cried and paid a generous fee. Days latter she returned and told us that her husband always parted his hair on the left. Seems in this picture the hair was parted on the right. My boss being a quick thinker quickly blurted out “Lady all I can tell you is this is that’s we found when we took off the hat”. The lady accepted that explanation and departed happy.

I researched the website about wedding ring traditions. One website referred to a biblical connection, and that is probably where the answer lies. In a lot of countries, especially Catholic, the ring is/was worn on the right hand. Mystery solved!
