Ideas for photos on self expression

I am taking a class at a jr college and they want 6-10 photos of a self portrait more like self expression (not pictures of yourself) but more like symbols of who you are - CAN ANYONE HELP! She said to look in library and internet for symbols like art therapy - like fire meaning anger BUT I CAN'T FIND NOTHING. I am a mother, grandmother, believe in God, take time to smell the roses, help families of alcoholics -= how do I take pictures of that. Rose

Sometimes Rose, the truth is found in simple things not withstanding the internet. I think you answered your own question. How can you NOT take pictures of those things you're involved with? Like your kids and grandchildren, the families you work with, the roses, and anything else that you have a significant interest in. It seems you don't need secondary symbols of things you already have primary symbols of in your life. Now, just go out and start photographing them. ;>)
Take it light.

Like open a wine bottle and lay it down and let it drip on digital print of a family so the ink runs.
Drip right down between one of the parents and the rest of the family, alcohol splitting the family.

These guys are giving you wonderful ideas!!(Gregory's is a real WOW! portrait of crisis and will give a Punch to this essay)
Not to simplifiy your issue but for others as well, We here see this type of question alot.
These types of assignments are truely personal and are ment to open up the imagination that you WANT to come through your lens on a day to day basis.
and as Mark states you have plenty of insperation, your instructor now wants you to funnel it through your lens.
and though it may seem scary, there is no set right or wrong, just a excersise in imagination.
and I bet you will be Plesently surprised to see how you do.
Wishing you the best of luck,
**Oh and great job, moving forward ito a new venture with the very full life you have !!:-)
