Photography Question

shutter noise

Last night I was shooting some photos in my local church and the shutter noise was a little load. Not more then normal, but in the quiet church it seemed loud. I was using a canon 1ds and the lens was a 70-200mm 2.8 L USM. WHat part maks the noise and is there any way to make it quiter?
Thanks, Sandy

Most of the "clack" noise is the mirror flipping up. The shutter actuation is less noisy. There is no setting on the camera that would lessen the noise. Only thing you can do is try to muffle it with a "blimp" (Example) or similar DIY solution.

  What is this "blimp" thing?

Click on the link I provided. It's a sound-proof (or at least sound muffling) case.

Sorry, I didnot know that the sight was under the word example. $800 it is not cheap!

:-) Like most photographic accessories, $$$. So maybe a DIY (Do It Yourself) solution. Make a similar case with foam rubber and maybe a lunch box, or just wrap a towel around the camera to muffle the noise somewhat. ;)

LOL Jon! I can just see someone holding a lunch box up to their face to snap a pic. I'm sure you're referring to one of those colorful ones kids carry. Just too funny!

Compact cameras have no flip-flopping mirror! If they do make a sound it's often an electronic fake sound. Which can usually be switched off. And then, HEY! Presto! You've got a silent camera!

And for US $ 800, you can get a handful of those.
