Cocktails & Chocolate, Countdown to February '07

Ah yes, the soft shoosh-a-shaka, shoosh-a-shaka sound of a frosty cocktail shaker and the velvety, melting pleasure of full, chocolaty goodness upon the tongue can mean only one thing around here: Cocktails & Chocolate. (Can you really believe it's time again already?)

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the monthly thread that gives us all an opportunity to show off, brag, revel, and hope! It's time to share either that one photo you really, really think is going to garner a medal or that one you really, really WISH would bring home the silver or gold.

After such a wonderful January countdown with so many fine photographs (and quite the number of winners!), I only hope this month's thread is equally as successful.

Of course, as always, I had a difficult time trying to pick which one of my entries I wanted to post. Since I went with an animal photo last month, I figured I'd go in a different direction: how can one go wrong with the look of love?

I'm exciting to see everyone's photos, and to say, "congratulations!" to all the finalists.

Now let the fun begin....

--John

Hi John and Sylvia. You both have picked great photos and I really like the way the background effects you've chosen CONTRIBUTE to your images; I often think of backgrounds as something to be minimized, but you have both optimized them to great effect.
I'm choosing a theme entry ("Love Story")for this month's C&C pick. I took this photo nearly a year and a half ago and have always liked the story possibilities it suggests. I thought it was a nice twist on the theme.

I just started joining in last month and can't believe a month has already gone by. I love looking at everyone's favorites and seeing my email fill up in anticipation of a finalist win!!

Here are my favorites for February (I think February, I will keep better track at the end of this month)

Feb. was a bit of "quiet" for me... Most entries were resubmits with minor reworks. This is probably my favorite Feb. entry, of my few "first-time" entries that month. Had I known the theme for March, I probably would have waited! ;)

Hello Nikki--a faithful dog is definitely the embodiment of love! The photo certainly suggests story. Nice to see you back here.

Suzanne--The month does zoom by at a fantastic pace, doesn't it? The glow of color in freezing is very nice, as is the comp and detail. In your second one, I like the backlit effect, and the softness of the waves. Good luck with these!

Chris--So good to see you here my friend! The effects in this one give it an almost vanGogh-esque feel. The more I look at it, the more I like it!

Kara--I agree with you, we're off to a great start--and you're photo is definitely a big reason for it. I love the comp and the colors. The detail on the soft petals is just great. Well done indeed!

Yay! My favorite thread returned! LOL I started a little early and had some Japanese Plum Wine last night whilst shooting some fun stuff in my little 'studio'. :O) Anyway, I love all the favs so far! I had so many last month that I really liked...I am just not sure which one to pick, so I will also post two. Good luck to all! What is our chant? Chicken bone, chicken bone, lucky lucky chicken bone....;o)

Susan--Thanks for jumping in! Both your photos have a dof in them, and the detail is quie lovely. I also love the look you captured on your dog's face!

Michelle (L.G.)--I can see why they are your favs! Two fantastic photos, there. I love the idea of having a heart in the center of the first one, and the selective focus in "Gentle Touch" is great for the subject (and title!).

Margie--I'm glad you stopped by, even if you're feeling a bit low on the inspirtation side. I have to say, though, that for having only submitted four photos, you really nailed it with this one. What a great capture!

Michelle (P.)--I think we'll give you a pass for a few nips of plum wine! I just love the lines/light/black & white conversion in "Jesse's Way." A very strong photo, for sure. And I love seeing you getting your son off on the right foot with photography! Nicely done all around. (And I do believe the chant is chicken bone related....)

What types of chocolate are preferred? And is it red wine that goes with chocolate?

Personally I'd rather have pizza with a nice mellow beer ;-)

Irene--Glad you're here! I took the liberty to try and post a link to your photo:

Golden Glow

I sure hope that worked, because it's a lovely photo with great color!

Susan--I'm partial to white chocolate, but will never scoff at a fine dark or creamy milk! And red wine is always appropriate in my book. And I'll have you know that I'm now craving pizza and beer!

Nikki--Hello.

River Home Fire
Shot at near dusk last January, this Mississippi river home in Orchard Farm, Missouri goes up in flames. With no hydrants, firefighters had to truck in the water. Here two firefighters are seen cooling down a large propane tank (off frame to the left). Part of the house just collapsed when I took this image with my Nikon D200 using the Nikon 70-200mm ED VR 2.8 lens. A remarkable piece of glass. I think the lighting worked out pretty good since I was working against a setting sun which gave a nice warm tone to the firefighters (as if they weren't already warm!).

Sherry--What a cool car, and then there's the effects! Very fun experimentation. I also like the way the blue of the sky and the yellow of the field play off of each other. Nice work.

Ray--That sounds like it was quite a fire! You definitely captured a very dramatic moment. Nice instincts, and nice work with the light and comp!

Datha--It's always a pleasure to see you here! You have yet another beautiful portrait of a beautiful girl!

Sherry--Very spring-y entries. The colors in "Spring Bouquet" are great and play off of each other so nicely. "Warm Fuzzies" has a great pov, and you captured such fine detail!

Hi, it's been several months since I've joined this thread, (although I read it every month). I haven't entered much lately, being busy on a new job, but here is one of my favorites from a Valentine's bouquet. It was my first attempt at a composite image. This was taken on my kitchen table, but the walls didn't look good in the photo, so I added a sky in PS.

I have to say that I am impressed with all the photos so far in this thread, the competition is intense!

LOL I love everyones favorites so far...we are such the talented bunch aren't we?!?! LOL I am a bit snowed in here in central PA (we've already got 8 inches and they are saying at least 6 more) so I got another glass of that Japanese plum wine (Fu-ki if you're interested)and a slice of homemade white pizza in place of the chocolate for now, and I am heading to my secret hide out (a.k.a. my studio in the basement) I just wanted to bump this thread to the top of the discussion boards since some weird stuff is showing up there.   Okay, Michelle, you're on. It really IS fun to see so many great photos--and such variety! I don't know all the categories and didn't do an inventory, but a quick review suggests we may have entries in flowers, digital darkroom, animals, people, monthly theme, macro, landscape, elements of design, and maybe catch-all. Is there a travel and place entry out there that someone likes?

Nikki~ Speaking for myself...I think its odd for BP to have a 'travel' category. Personally, I find that most of my 'travel' shots fall into one category or another, and if they don't, well, that's what they made that 'catch-all' category for, right? LOL

Jayne~ it is my bet that we don't see Daisy calm too often? LOL very nice!

Lani~ Thanks for dropping in! No favorite entry from last month??

I like the placement on the diagonal very much, and knew it was a bow (having played violin in my youth.) But I wouldn't mind seeing more of one end or the other... either could work; the tip is a lovely shape on many bows, and the 'grip' can be equally attractive.

I like the placement on the diagonal, too, but had to go back to find the bow when you asked your question so no, I don't think it's prominent enough. Chris's suggestion to show one end or the other would help--I thought it was a table edge though I wondered briefly about the violin's being laid down like that where it could so easily be knocked off :) I do like the photo a lot and particularly like that you entered it in monthly theme. So often those entries are pretty predictable and this stands out; it's unexpected, but it feels right once you see it.

I do love the dark rich colors in your violin image. As for me, always have loved classical music, especially piano, cello, and violin music (more or less in that order but it all depends on the music). Violin will not be a violin without a bow, and in my opinion, this composition (no pun intended, :)) works well with the way you captured it.

Ah, the Look of Love!, very nice, John, .. yep, can't go wrong with that.., nicely done, indeed.

..well, I'm going with animals again, inanimate ones, that is. It's a return of "Puppy Luv" of a couple of Februaries(?) ago. The "Love Story" was a done deal on this one :)
It's my favorite, but also once again none that may draw attention of BP Judges...

Victoria--I like the dramatic lighting in both of these. They both convey a good sense of story and interest. And, yes, it was immediately obvious that it was a bow, but I can definitely see the advantage of Chris' and Nikki's suggestion. Nice work!

Tamera--Lovely work as always! You have such an eye for color and composition. I know you are going to do wonderfully with these!

Les--I think you're SEEING double since only one post came through! LOL

Nobi--What fantastic, creative work! Not only have you demonstrated your skills of photography, but then you go and show us your origami skills as well! This one is set up quite nicely, and lit very well. Nice job!

Lani--It really is great to have you (and everyone else) join in. And your photo is really great. I like the gentle feel here, and the way you've captured the scene definitely conveys a sense of story.

Great shots, good luck to all.

I've been really sick, so haven't been online much.

After just seeing all the images posted here in this thread I can't help wonder how I ever get even one finalist. When you really look close and spend some time to evaluate the entries, you can see that there are a tremendous amount of outstanding photos that donít make it to the finals.
Good Luck to Everyone!

Michelle--I hope you're right about the timing, although if there's one thing this thread has taught me it's that there is no predicting the announcements! And as far as your image, "The Tree in a Blizzard," I just love it! I can see why it's one of your favorites. I think you'll do very well with it.

Kerby--Glad to see you back again! I love the light and the color in this lily photo, and the reflection peeking up from the bottom of frame is just great!

Lani--Thank you so much, you make me blush.

Kai--Sorry to hear about your illness. I hope you're on the mend. I gladly accept your chicken bones, and send some back to you!

Les--Now you're just being modest, my friend! There are definitely so many fantastic photos in just this thread alone, and I have to say your's are right up there!

Great job with this thread John! I first stumbled across it last month. Your positive (cocktail) glass-half-full approach really embodies what this website is (or should be) about (for those with day jobs anyway). Keep up the great effort.

I am going to try an offering . . . here goes . . .

Best Regards, Steven

Hi Everyone! Glad to see everyone is enjoying their favorite cocktails. I will be just sticking to Coke tonight, but I did have a couple of Cadbury mini eggs. Those are good.

Love all the great photos here this month! May we all come out winners. Here are my two favorites for this month.

Good luck everyone!

The all-time coolest basketball tip-off shot ever
Shot from a catwalk above the court. After three years of shooting the Idaho 1A District II basketball tournaments, I was offered the opportunity to shoot from this vantage point for the first time..... 3 minutes before tipoff.
Not much time to prepare, so I scrambled up the ladder, headed out over the court and took a few quick test shots to set the camera... and, well here is the result.

I think you're looking at crossed fingers for 3-4 more days, Susan!
Jan's Finalists were announced on the 24th. Dec's Finalists were announced on the 24th. Nov's Finalists were announced on the 29th (holiday delay, very likely) and Oct's Finalists announced on the 23rd...

Maybe you'd better switch to something non-alcoholic, Susan; I think you're in for a longer wait than 3-4 days. With a judges comment AND a POTD, I predict you will be waiting for the winners' list and not just the announcement of finalists. I certainly hope so, anyway--Jasper's a charmer and you did a great job with his portrait.

All this finger crossin' and calendar watchin' and finalist anticipatin' has gotten me thirsty! Chris, I know you've got the shakers. Would you please rattle me up something frosty, delicious, and strong? Thanks.

Somewhere between cramped fingers and hung-over heads I found some time to make a few photos! I actually had a relatively good day yesterday: I ended up with three fairly strong photographs in one afternoon! Not a bad day. It gives me something to wish for next month. (I didn't just start thinking about next month's thread already, did I? There really is someting wrong with my brain.)

  Thanks Rob,
Everytime I ask for a critique I get blown out of the water so it has definitely messed my confidence level a bit. comments like "I hate it" "give it up" "don't quit your day job" always the same fellow, he and his identities like to pick on people.
So I am growing thicker skin and having fun. Thank you again.

Hey c'mon now. Where is that positive (cocktail) glass-half-full perspective that John so faithfully upholds with this thread? (Although, when you really think about it, maybe John's positive attitude is because his cocktail is half empty.) But hey - hope thrives on a positive attitude. That's all I got.
Best Regards, Steven

Deborah--First of all, I'm so happy you decided to jump in and join the thread. We're always so happy to see photos from new participants. Just perusing your gallery, I see many photos I like very much, and your Ceremony photo is no exception! The selective color adds an interesting element, and the crop/comp lends a great degree of drama. Nice job. (And, of course, as long as YOU like your photos, opinions of others are just that: opinions. We can take what we want from them and leave the rest. In the end, the only opinion that REALLY counts is your own.)

Steven--LOL, there have been some that have suggested that positive attitudes have come served in a fancy glass: see Chris B.!

Hello everyone---first time reader and poster here.

I have just started to put pictures up at my gallery---it has taken me awhile to get up my nerve. Feb. is the first month I have entered the contests. I am feeling brave!

I am guessing that I will have trouble figuring out how to get my favorite entry for Feb. up. But here it goes....

Hello everybody--can I jump in? I try never to miss an opportunity for free drinks! I'll take a Bombay martini, straight up, with 2 cocktail onions--shaken, not stirred, of course.

There are so many fantastic photos in this thread and in the contest I can't wait to see what the Contest Gods have chosen! Will try to figure out how to upload my favorite (if I have one) from Feb.

In the meantime, Deborah's comment about harsh criticism reminded me of a hilarious satirical piece about online photo critiques. If you want to read it, it's at http://theonlinephotographer..com/2006/06/great-photographers-on-internet.html

Hi everyone, my first time contributing to this thread. I just found it last month. Anyway, I don't know if this is my favorite but I think it is the one with the best chance of getting a finalist because it is "arty" and different (I think so, anyway). This is my wishful thinking anyway. I know the odds of getting chosen are not good. I enjoy looking at everyone's work. they are all fabulous. good luck to everyone.

Wendy--Welcome aboard! I'm glad you found us. And I'm glad you posted your photo because it really is a fantastic portrait! The light and the comp are great, and you captured a quintessential "baby" face/expression. Very nice work.

Deborah--I'll uncork a bottle right now.

Colleen--You obviously have fantastic taste in drinks! And I'm so glad you posted that link. I saw it a while ago, but lost the link. That's a hilarious send-up! Thanks.

Stephanie--Thanks for your first time post! The comp here is great, particularly with the arc of the stem. Your colors, too, really pop.

Hi all! Lots of great entries again this month. I think I'm starting to anticipate this thread more then the finalists. ;o)
I'm enjoying some Cadbury mini eggs here tonight and have plenty to share. I decided to post my favorite here for the first time. I feared a jinx last month but since I didn't post and still didn't get a finalist I figured why not. Let's see if I do it right...

I'd like to add my congratulations to everybody, and good luck in the next round. I received a finalist, and I'm totally thrilled of course. But I was just thinking--and others have made the same comment, "It wasn't my favorite." It just made me realize that you can never be sure what the judges will pick.

And this goes to Kai, Nikki and anybody else waiting for their first finalist: you just never know what will catch their eye--you could go for months or years without a finalist and then suddenly wind up with not only a 2nd place, but even a 1st place win!!

I really believe it WILL happen with persistence, so please, nobody ever give up on the contest--if I could get a finalist, anybody can!!

I have been incommunicado for a few days now, and haven't had a chance to check in. But here I am, and I just wanted to shout a huge congrats to all the winners! Fantastic job one and all!

A reminder to everyone who wants to participate next time...
You should make a record of your MARCH contest entries no later than tomorrow, so you can remember them for John's next thread in a few weeks; BP will clear your "Current Contest Entries" page tomorrow night, to make way for your April entries.
