Canon USM vs IS F2.8 vs F4

I'm trying to decide whether to sacrifice the IS on the 24-105 F4 IS L USM, and rather go for the 24-70 F2.8 L USM (faster, but no IS) - I wish the 24-70 was IS !!! Any suggestions, or anyone used both and have preferences - thanks a mil! I've got the 70-200 IS L USM, but its very heavy and limiting at weddings in terms of not enough angle - the 24-105 really appeals, but then so does the F2.8! HELP!!

If the point of having the fast lens is to shoot in low light, and you like the 24-105 better for other reasons, maybe the IS will make up for the slowness? Depends on what you need I guess.

Robyn--it's been some months since you posted. Which lens did you buy? What is your feedback? I am actually looking at the same 2 lenses now and would love to hear which you ended up with and how you like it. I have several 2.8 lenses and it turns out lots of my shots are at f4 anyway! And I think I'd appreciate the extra length...

Hi Eileen - I actually went with the 24-105 IS L USM F4 - its a great lens, and I think not as heavy as the F2. I've posted new pix on my gallery and website, and many were shot with it. Its a lovely lens - you could use it as a walk around lens ( if you could be tempted to leave the 70-200 F2.8 at home, coz thats heavy!!!)

I shyed away from the 24-70 f/2.8 L because of all the supposed problems with back-focusing. I was leary about spending that much money for a lens with a lot of complaints. I ended up with a used 28-70 f/2.8L based on reviews. The lens of course is discontinued, but it got rave reviews in its time. I also ended up with a 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS as the budget just wasn't there for the 2.8 version. I can say there are times when I would really like the extra stop. The IS does make up for it in some senses, but when the light is low and the subject is moving the fact I can get a hand-held acceptable shot at sometimes 1/15 sec does not help if the subjects are moving. This is where I wish I had the 2.8 I would check out your EXIF data and see how many shots are at F/4.0 where they might have benefited with the extra stop.
