Photography Question

Heather M. Wareham

Panasonic Lumix dmc-fz3

In my camera I just found out something. In P,A,S,M, Flower,FILM, SCN, setting. I can put the camera on Digital zoom. Now it shows my camera going 12x zoom then there is a blue part the goes right up too 48x. Does this my I can zoom in 48x. I have been trying to get picture out on the lake since last summer. 12X seem like it was just not enough. Over the winter I have been trying to get the ice huts and 12x isn't enough to bring them in closer. Do you think me turn on this Opion it will give me 48x zoom. This might be sill but it a beginner Q LOL LOL LOL

Yes, Heather, that is your zoom range. But it is DIGITAL zoom. Meaning the camera's processor takes the central part of the optical image, as pixels, and blows them up digitally to those incredible 'zoom' ranges. Blowing up pixels doesn't make for pretty pictures, though. This is where high megapixel count cameras have an advantage.

However, whether it be optical or digital zoom, the camera shake associated with such long focal lengths is TERRIBLE. Tripod use is absolutely neccessary.

With a modest amount of digital zoom - say 2x or 4x - you should be able to get the ice huts nicely framed. IF YOU USE A TRIPOD!

Have fun!
