Photography Question

Deborah Liperote

What's Your Favorite Photoshop Technique/Action

I am really making a concentrated effort to learn Photoshop cs2 and as I look around at photos and websites and tutorials- the sky is the limit.
So I thought it would be nice to hear
what you love to do to your photos so they are lab ready. Special effects, smart sharpening , gaussian blur, borders...whatever. A before and after picture would be a great addition.

I always like putting a border around my photos using layer styles, blending options, inner shadows.
I also downloaded some actions from Adobe Exchange that were nice. One is called vintage. I'll try to post a couple of photos

Who Me?
for your kitchen shot I would have used a tripod and shoot with the lights off, then one with the lights on but making sure that I exposed so that the lights were not so bright and then use HDR and bring the two together. Your eye goes straight to the lights and distracts from the rest of the picture because they are so hot.

Hi Deborah... I use to be a PS nut... Not so much anymore.. But still love the occasional filter..
This is a barn shot I took in the fall about 2 years ago.. I loved the reflection, but it needed alot of work.. So into PS I went..

I cloned alot of ugly elements out, cropped it in, saturated color.. Straightened it, and added the romance filter from VP to soften the shite overcast sky.. Kinda gives it a sunset glow..:)

Thanks for letting me share one of my favs. with you..:)

Good luck learning CS2...

I show the clients the photos online that I have retouched and then send them to the lab as such.

Thanks so much Kara and Debbie- I really appreciate your examples. I don't know about others but I know that when I see the before and after pictures of others work it helps me appreciate what is acceptable photography and what needs worked on. in alot of the books you see a technique that you can apply to a photo but they show the after shot... I need to see the before shot so that I can understand why I should have done the technique.
Thats why I appreceiate your responding because I already learned somethings just by your before and after and what you did.
To me I wish more BP members would join in on this discussion because it could really help out the newbies to train their eye either in photography and/or photoshop.
I'm so embarassed... different times I thought a photo I worked so hard on was so nice and then I throw it out there for discussion and I was critiqued and really missed some very key things. so I could either keep being embarrassed or grow and ask for help.
so again thanks and to others please take the time to respond to this with photos so I can keep learning...but not just me ... many others will benefit from the time you take.

Hi Deborah... I remember back when I started posting, I would think an image was so great.. And now.. I have pretty much thrown out alot of that stuff.. I have some favorites of my kids, that I love simply cause they are my kids.. But photographically, they STINK.. I see that now... Critique is such a valuable tool.. There is always someone with a more trained eye and I am always willing to be critiqued, although it hurts a little sometimes, (it's toughened me up) EVERY ONE I have ever gotten taught me a valuable lesson, and I never repeat the same mistake again...:)

VP is short for Virtual Photographer.. You can google it and you will find a series of free downloads and they are PRICELESS!! I highly recommend everyone add them as a plugin to PS..
