Shoot Las Vegas I will be going to Las Vegas in a few weeks. I don't do a lot of bright light night photography. Would anyone have any tips for getting good shots of all the neon and night lights? I have a Pentax K10D and usually use my 18-55 or Sigma 70-300. No tripod this trip, might have room for a monopod though. Any advice is appreciated.

Unless you have an image stabilized lens your best bet would be to buy a tripod small enough to fit in your luggage. You will need one if you plan to photograph in low light, at least that's been my experience. I bought one off ebay for around $30 that worked fine for a recent trip.

Somebody said here that the bulbs they use for all those lights are daylight balanced. So if that's true color balance should be easier than expected. But if you're planning on shooting the lights, you can meter off the lights, then increase that by at least 1&1/2. That's a ballpark. 2 might be better. Wider views that have the lights with some sky, street, etc.., you might actually be able to shoot at what the meter tells you. A regular street scene at night, going by just the camera meter usually gives a drastic over exposure of the street lights because you have greater areas of darkness with a light here and one there. But with places like Vegas where there's so many lights concentrated, you can many time get the night to balance with the lights.

Thanks for the advice folks. Fortunately the new Pentak K10D has an stabilized camera body (anti shake) and it works very well. I'll print off your tips and bring it with me. Thanks again.
