VR or not to VR

Hello everyone;
I am trying to decide on a telephoto lens but have a question on whether to invest in a VR or not. I have a Nikon D200 and would like to purchase a zoom up to at least 600mm. I've seen different reviews on it and would love to know you thoughts.
I am an outdoor photographer. My love is wildlife. I'm going to Africa next fall.

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks and have a great day. :)laura

  I have the Nikon 70-200 2.8 ED VR lens and love it! However the largest VR lens Nikon makes so far is their 200 -400 zoom (unless something has come out that I didn't catch). The VR is really only good for when you are hand holding the lens or use a monopod. At 600mm you may be looking to tripod that monster.

  Hi Ray and thanks for your response. I was thinking the same as what you just said. With any large lens, "tripod'ing" is the only way to go. I think I have decided on a 200-500mm lens. Just wasn't sure how sensative it would be when I pan and if a 400mm VR would be better OR if there was really any difference except for hand holding or tripod.
Not sure if any of that made sense.LOL My mind is a little frozen right now because of the weather.

Anyways, thanks again for your quick response. :)laura
