Photography Question

David Gordon

Why is this picture fuzzy?

Why am I out of focus?
Why am I out of focus?
blurry

I have been experimenting with my new D30 and took this shot last night in the P mode. The lens is a 24-70 f2.8. According to the camera, the exposure was 1/4 second at f5, 64 mm (amazing amount of data!), ISO 100. The distance was, perhaps, a few feet and the bar code was the focus point. I was amazed to see the lack of focus (and "ghosting") and, in puzzling over it, have concluded that the only possible explanation is that it was shot by hand and the exposure too long. Is there any other possible reason?
Thanks in advance.

  David,
I would agree that the likely case is the long hand-held exposure. That's a heavy lens. I can hand-hold mine as slow as 1/30 second if I'm careful, but 1/4 second is tough even with a monopod.

Enjoy your new camera.

Ditto. I think it is in focus, but just blurred by camera motion (hand-held shake). Just as well since you don't necessarily want anyone to know your personal health information. ;-)
