Infrared set up for digital B&W ?

Hi all! Whats the best set up for infrared B&W shots without camera alterations! Like whats the best filter setting on camera, (I have the Nikon D80) etc! I have seen a few Infrared post and I love them. Also can you take color Infrared images? Thanks ahead of time, and thanks for BP existing! I am so hooked on this site!

I do custom conversions of color digital images to infrared, and it is tricky. I've also used my camera and removed the infrared light filter and took some infrared images that way (I have a Sigme SD10, not a Nikon). You seem more interested in the former rather than the latter?

If you have Photoshop (or Elements with my tool additions http://hiddenelements.com) you can begin to think about conversions by looking at the red component for your images. These red components will portray some infrared qualities. What you might want to think about as well is using some filtering on your camera to enhance the red capture. That is, if you use a filter that would otherwise be for infrared film photography, you will increase exposure times by eliminating light from other components/channels, and enhance the infrared effect of your capture. However, this tactic will leave you without other color information which can come in handy when processing images and attempting infrared conversions. I use full color captures and a fairly complicated process to make IR conversions with an action (see here: http://www.hiddenelements.com/infrared5_tool_samples.htm ). The result is left adjustable so you can enhance glows, grain, and other infrared qualities.

Some cameras are sensitive to IR light, and that invisible area of the spectrum is what makes the magic. Processes that take color and convert can only imitate the result, not entirely replicate it.

  Chris,
Some synchronicity there! I hope you found the tips helpful, and if you have more questions about the Infrared (or black-and-white conversions) please ask!
