Photography Question

White background; what do you use?

I'm just curious to know what kind of white backdrop or background you use in your studio. I just use a white sheet for the moment. I've noticed though that in some of the photos on here that their backdrops look like they have a slight shine to them. I know this isn't a cloth material. When I took my son to have his pictures made the photography used some type of board that was white, and when it came to covering the floor; it had a cure in it then proceded to cover the floor. It was nice in size. It reminded me of poster board, but a LOT bigger.

I use white seamless paper. This is available from most of the large photo retailers. It comes in widths of 4.5. 9 and 12 feet. Lengths are about 30, 100 or 150 feet. The stuff is cheap enough to be disposable. It is smooth and very even. It is also available in many colors. There used to be two different whites one for color and one for black and white. Snow is for color. I don’t have to order it often as I buy the long rolls. Much cheaper that way. Thanks, John

Ps. A 150X12 foot roll is very heavy!

  Hi Kara,

...as said, white seamless paper is used more often than not. It is usually extended from ceiling to floor and then "curved" out at the bottom..Known as a "sweep."

One problem I see many people encounter, is the part your subject stands on. Paper is a poor choice for this area. It wrinkles and tears easily.

In my studio, when doing full length shots, I "sweep" slightly where wall meets floor..at that point I use a piece of frosted white Lexan for my subject to stand on. (10x6 Ft) It is very durable, and being frosted, it does not have much reflectivity.

The line where the paper meets the Lexan is not noticible as I generally am blowing out the white background.

I've seen many different approaches to (what) your subject can stand or sit on.
6 inch tiles..black, white, alternating..Only your imagination will limit you.

All the best,

Pete
