Photography Question

Sarah Cordes

First digital SLR

Hi,
I'm about to purchase my first digital SLR camera, and I was wondering if anyone had any preferences or advice. I'm not looking for something extremely professional or pricey, just something to experiment with. Thanks!

Sarah, you will do yourself a disservice if you don't check out the models that fall within your price range. Therea aren't that many models at the $600-700 price level - Canon, Nikon, Sony(?), Olympus - SIgma and Fuji don't really have entry-level models (in terms of price).

But the diffreences between the cameras has much more to do with ergonomic issues - which feels better in your hands, which viewfinder is more decipherable (or even bright enough). My point is that looking at spec sheets or review or other people's opinions on which camera is "better" is a fool's errand. Go to a store and handle them - I'll bet you will find that some just feel more natural in your hands than others. For example, a few ounces of weight may not seem like much, but it could make the difference between an uncomfotably heavy camera or one that just feels too flimsy for your taste. But comparing weights or hearing someone else say "that one's better because it's lighter (or heavier) is just not the best way to go.

That said, get the Nikon D50.

Just kidding - get out there and handle these puppies! If you don't like the way the camera feels and works, you will be less likely to use it, and isn't the point of the exercise to go out and take photos?
