Shooting a large group at night

I have a large group-50 people- to shoot outside at night with the city sky line as a backdrop. What is the best way to obtain properly exposed subjects while also getting the skyline detail?

Set up cam on tripod. Shoot the background/skyline with a long enough shutter speed. Then shoot the group with sufficient light. Then merge the 2 exposures.

One more thing! Test it beforehand for real. Go to the exact location with a friend. Or two. Establish your viewpoint and get familiar with the Field of View. Then do a dress rehearsal. Shoot the skyline. And shoot your friends. Keep the aperture constant, shoot in RAW and bracket the shutter speeds. You'll feel much more secure by the time you get to shoot the big group.

One thing you unfortunately can't test with your 2 friends is how to handle, manage and direct such a large group of people into a well photographeable pose. Think hard about that! Better yet, make someone else responsible for crowd control and direction! You need to concentrate on other stuff.

Like, have you got the lighting for that job...?
