Heavens to Canon - but why do NEED to upgrade?

Your post doesn't say whether you're an amateur or would-be pro or pro. There's no gallery so we can't judge, from your work, the type of photographs you take.

But, all this stuff about upgrading is the fuel camera makers love. If I'm correct, your Rebel has either a 6 or 8 MP sensor. So, for a mere $2,500-3,000, you'll have a 12 MP chip. Wow!

Do you need it? Check out this month's Pop Photo for a damning article that really suggests sensor size is just a lot of hype that most of us don't need.

In his book Printing Digital B&W Pictures [or whatever the actual title is,] George Schaub gives a chart revealing file sizes for large prints. For prints over 8X12, he suggests 30-50 MB files.

Gee, my Canon 30D, with its 8.3 MP sensor, produces 8.2 MB RAW files which, when I convert to TIFF files, are a mere 44 MBs - more than enough to print a dead sharp 13X19 print.

Recently, I've heard that professional wedding photographers are using the 5D - primarily because of low noise at higher ISO settings. And, of course, one does eliminate the 1.6 factor issue. But, if you've already got a 17-??? lens, you have the 28 mm wide angle capability that most of use.

All this being said, if you just have to spend money, go buy the 5D. From my side, I'd rather buy a lens or, preferentially, an airline ticket to someplace really special place.

Like John said, how will a 5D make your pictures better than a 300D? It's all in the lenses and you said you got some L series so master those, then decide if a new camera will make your images better!

I've fallen into the "more money means better photos" trap, myself, so I'm not being self-righteous here. You're already shooting through L glass. I'd stay with your present body until the full-size sensor technology filters down to a more affordable price, unless you bought Microsoft stock 20 years ago.

  Hi Guys
thanks for the imput - and I appologise for the lack of info on my part, I am trying to earn a living at photography - this is my first year, I specialise in two main areas , commercial (products / food) which is going very well and Animals which I love and was starting to take off especially the equine side but now the weather has turned cold - I live in Canada, snow has stopped play.
I just uploaded a few animal pics for you guys to take a look at and my web site is www.imagineitsold.ca

This is partly why I feel the need to upgrade, when I go out on shoots I worry that my customers will think I am just playing because I have a rebel.
In fact a couple of my clients made comments that they too own a rebel.

I was also hoping the 5D would be a faster camera very often my rebel quits to buffer up and I miss a shot - this is not good when you are shooting action shots - horse jumping in particular.

What do you think?
