Layers - Screen ? What's it mean? I've been using the Orton effect lately, and really enjoy the results. When layering, you need to convert your layer to 'screen', then the next to 'multiply' etc - I'm wondering what 'screen' actually is?? Besides when using Orton, when would you use 'screen' mode, or multiply for that matter. I must say that when opening the pig (hi res jpeg), and clicking on 'screen', its almost like doing an auto levels - is this an acceptable short cut?

Pig? Who let the hogs out jokes have been banned from this thread. Graphic design/art compilations. Makes something semi-transparent so you can see it and another thing beneath it when you have multiple images layered. Watermarking. Screen, overlay, hardlight, softlight, they do similar things with different affects to contrast and appearence. You can use multiply to make a picture that have blown out hightlights look better. But it can take several duplicate layers, and playing around with the opacity of each one. Plus mask earasing areas away. Would it be acceptable if it made the picture look how you want it? It's not going to be an all in one adjustment for every kind of picture.

Hello Robyn, Here's the simple answer. Multiply will darken by 2 stops, screen will do the opposite. The amount is of course adjustable with "opacity." Pete

If you want to just darken a picture, or lighten, better to use levels or curves.
