What do you guys think about the Gorillapod? www.joby.com/ Have you heard about this? Does it work well? I know it isn't a replacement for a real tripod, but it might come in handy when you're on a trip and see an unexpected photo-op.

I just got the SLR gorrillapod and I love it. I have only used it a few times to take some photos of friends but it allows for a bit more creativity. I was able to hang it from the ceiling and get a nice looking up picture. It is very sturdy and grips like no business, don't put it round your arm unless you want hurt. (experienced by me!!) It allows for pictures in places you might not be able to put your tripod up in. Colin

I'm for any reliable support system that's proven better than hand-holding and negates lugging around a bulky tripod. (I've even designed a few home-made supports for my own special needs.) This gorillapod thing looks practical for light-weight applications...but will it support the weight of a heavy SLR/lens combination?

If you look around their site, you'll see that they have a regular gorillapod, a slr gorillapod, and a zoom slr gorillapod (for those slr's with big 'ol telephotos on them).

I also saw a 'GorillaPod Telephoto' mentioned somewhere. No mention of it on the Joby website, though. IF there is, or will be one, however, it's an indication that although the 'GorillaPod SLR' may support an SLR with kitlens, I suspect it will collapse if you add even a small flashgun! Like the 'original' Gorillapod only supports very modest, decidedly lightweight Point & Shoot cams. Anyway, my local photo store is listed as carrying it/them, so I'll pop in there one of these days to have a look. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Just tested it with my tamron 70-300 zoom on a Nikon d50 and it was able to take the weight, added on the sb-600 and it collapses. It can take the flash when using my prime lenses, which I would probably use more with the gorrillapod anyway as zooming would be hard from some of the places you can put it. Colin

Colin, Can you take part in a little test? Mount your camera and 70-300 onto the Gorrilapod and take a shot at 1/15 second. Then take the same shot with the same camera/lens at the same shutter speed but with a sturdy tripod (assuming you have one). I'm curious to see if this nifty device will past the "jiggle test" of camera movement when the shutter activates. To make this test really scientific, you can trip the shutter hands-free with your timer or a remote device. I for one would be interested in seeing a side-by-side comparison of the two images...each uploaded with identical sharpening and adjustments.

Thanks Colin for participating in this little test. I for one, can see no difference in sharpness between the two...(at least on my monitor). Bob
