Problems With Canon 10D

I have recently gone from flim to digital,
I have the Canon 10D and a 550 ez flash also a Sunpak 120 J. First problem is shooting with the 120 j , I recently shot a wedding and the 120 j flash only worked good for about 20 30 images then it seemed to only fire every 2 - 3 images, mind you I have used this same type of flash with my flim cameras for over 10 years with no problems what so ever. Now with the Canon 10dD it seems that it may not be suited for this digital camera. Second problem is the 550 ez on program it is inconsistant when shooting these weddings, I am gettting low shutter speeds and 3.5 to 5.6 reading on f stop when I should be getting at least 60/8

Sorry this is so long but I am so frustrated. Any advice would be greatly
appericated.
Thaks Pamela

Which Sunpak 120J, the TTL version or the non-TTL Auto? The TTL version will not work properly with Canon DSLRs. They do not operate with traditional open-shutter off-the-film TTL flash systems. They can't because the digital sensor (covered by glass low-pass/anti-alias filter) doesn't give the uniform reflectance of film. The Canon DSLRs require a flash to emulate E-TTL, which fires a preflash before the shutter opens which is measured by the evaluative meter. The non-dedicated Auto version can be used without problem, just coordinate the ISO and lens aperture settings and shoot in Av or M mode.

Similar if your Canon flash is the 540EZ and not the 550EX. EZ series speedlights are not compatible with E-TTL. The 10D and other Canon DSLRs require an EX series speedlight (or other brand that supports E-TTL), or a non-dedicated non-TTL auto model.

Hi Jon,
Thank you for your input, I have the non TTL version, I used it in Manual mode on flash setting and camera was set @ manual F8 / 1/60 the images looked good but the flash only working for a short time was my concern, also I do have the 550 ez flash, but the times I have set it on program on the camera setting and TTL on the flash ( mainly outdoor shots) they all seem to be blown out and setting at low shutter speed and large f stops.I will attach an image to show you. Thanks Pamela

  Jon,

I guess to sum my question up simply...
Is the Canon 10D able to use the 120J non TTL flash in Manual mode without causing the flash not to fire correctly or consistently? And why, when using my 10D on program and 550 ez flash on TTL does it set the shutter speed below 1/60 and the f stop at 4 or lower?
I am so confused. Thanks , Pamela

Please confirm, do you have the 540EZ or the 550EX? There is no 550EZ. The 10D in P will set lower than 1/60 shutter speed if it does not recognize a flash in the hotshoe. One thing to remember is that the flash should be turned off when you slide it into the hotshoe, then turn it on. If it is on when it is slid in, the several contacts cross and may upset the flash/camera communication.

The 120J non-TTL should work fine. Make sure the contacts in the hotshoe and flash foot are clean and that it is fully and firmly seated in the hotshoe.

  Thanks Jon,
I told you I was confused ....Yes I do have the 550 ex (sorry) Also I use a stroboframe usually and it requires a external connection from the hot shoe to the flash ( could that be a problem ) also I did have a few problems in the past with the external cable going from the hot shoe of the camera to the flash on the 120J so you have just jogged my memory so maybe it is time to check the cables and also the battery, Thanks so much, it is so nice to have a forum like this to vent. Your awesome,
Pamela
