Photography Question

lenses

I really enjoy the newsletter and have learned a lot. I have just purchased my first SLR, a Canon Rebel 2000 with 28 - 80mm lens. I am a very green beginner. Anyway my question is, I would like to purchase a telephoto lens for wildlife pictures to bring them up really close. I was thinking of a 75 - 300mm Canon lens and a 2X tele-converter (extender?) which would give me a 150 - 600 mm lens. Could someone please tell me if this would be a good choice. I would really appreciate any help anyone gives me. Thank you.

Hi marie,If you where using a lens for the sole use of photographing wildlife, then a prime 300mm or larger lens would be best. The main reason is that these are much `faster`than a telephoto.Which can be important if you want to capture a animal in motion etc.
Also if you add a teleconverter to a zoom lens this will slow it further and darken image in viewfinder.Very often the animals are in shaded location.
If you only occasionly use lens for wildlife then economically go for zoom & converter.
Whatever you do use a support as slow shutter speeds can cause `blur`.A mono is prefferable to a tripod when out in the wilds.
I only occassionly photograph wildlife using 28-200mm plus 2x converter &these are my observations.
Hope this is of help.Roland

Thanks, Roland. I definitely will take your advice into consideration before I decide on which lens I need.
