Which way to go? Body or Glass?? Currently I own a RebelXT, Sigma 50-500, Canon 18-55mm, and an older Sigma 100-300 F4-6.5. I will be receiving approximately $4,000 in the near future and am looking to upgrade something. Just not really sure what. What I love about my current kit: Needles to say, I am exclusively an aviation photographer (photographing airplanes, not the ground from an airplane). About 80% of the time I use Tv mode at nothing higher than 1/125. When I shoot jets I use Av to get the highest shutter speed. (again, depends upon whether I want the background blurred to show motion) So, I really couldn't care less how slow the lens is. (Hence how much I love my 50-500!)
So with all that dribble, I say thank you all a TON for your input! :)

Sounds like you already have it worked out! Keep the glass and buy a new body if that will meet your objectives. As for me with the shooting that I do, and a lot in low light, I invested more in my glass than my bodies (2 Nikon D200's). No doubt the 5D is a very nice body and you are paying a huge chunck of change just to get the full frame CMOS. Let's see the pics when you get the new bod! Ray

Just a thought. I don't know the image quality of the 50-500mm lens. If you want to upgrade to the 5D, maybe you need to upgrade the lens too. EOS 5D + EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM At B&H this combination costs US$4200 before rebate. After rebate, US$3520. or better EOS 5D + EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM + EF 1.4X II At B&H this combination costs US$4235 before rebate. After rebate, US$3545.

Jon, you hit the nail on the head my friend! lol I just like having a game plan well in advance when it comes to investments like this. The only concerns I have with my kit now are when things are down for maintenance. I'll be out of the game indefinately until they are fixed.

Well I've come to the conclusion that bodies come and go, but glass lasts forever. So, my first purchase is looking to be the Sigma 10-20mm F/4-5.6 EX DC . Why the sigma and not the Canon? Well, the canon one is an EF-S. The 5D does not take the EF-S lenses (although maybe the future replacement body will?? ) and since I will be upgrading to that later I don't want to have to deal with selling that lens and replacing it with a better one in the very near future. Also, I really am in the need of an ultra-wide angle lens so I can get complete cockpit shots for my clients. The 18mm end just doesn't cut it with my Rebel XT and its 1.6 crop factor. Next I will plan on purchasing the Canon 28-300mm F/4-6.5L IS USM. This will become my primary air-to-air lens. And it will also be an acceptable replacement should my 50-500 go out and need repairs. Then after that I will upgrade to a 5D or newer version. It is very likely that by the time I'm able to purchase these two lenses and then move on to another body, they will have an all new one. haha So, there you have it. My grand plan. Subject to change without notice. lol

FYI Jason, The Sigma 10-20 is a DC lens, designed for the smaller sensor bodies like the XT. It can be mounted and used on the 5D, but it will vignette badly.

P.S. Sigma does make a 12-24 f/4.5-5.6 EX HSM that will work well on the "full frame" 5D, and 12mm is still pretty wide angle on the XT.
