This doesn't work with PSE 3.0.

It should, I've used it with PSE 2.0 on a few of my photos. I really like the effect it gives.

Ok Rob I may just be do it wrong. the only way I know how to duplicate a image is in layers. And when I try to close the original all of it closes. Image>apply image how did you do that? :O)

I haven't seen PSE 3.0, but in 2.0 it's the menu >image>duplicate image. This creates a copy of the image, not a layer, to which you can then apply an effect and move it onto the other copy and they become layers which you can then blend together. Hope that helps.

Hopefully I'm not mistaken here, and seeing a result that isn't really "Ortonized" afterall... But I believe the whole process can be done just using Layers.

1. Open the image to be Ortonized.
2. Create 2 new, identical Layers in that image.
3. On New Layer 1, set Blending to Screen, Opacity to 100%.
4. On New Layer 2, set Blending to Multiply, Opacity to 100%.
5. On New Layer 2, apply Gaussian Blur Filter, choosing your settings as appropriate.
(6. Depending on the original image, I sometimes add another duplicated Screen Layer, made from the background Layer, to further lighten up the darker portions.)

What I like about this approach is that you can see the Gaussian effect before you apply it. (Because the Layer you're blurring is already at Multiply, and already stacked with the earlier Screen Layer.)

Someone let me know if my Layers-only method does not produce the same effect; from what I can tell, it should be the same end result as using a duplicate image for the Multiply/Gaussian step, then dragging that image onto the Screened image...

Thanks Chris, your method was actually a bit easier to use. Also, as you mentioned, I like the preview as you adjust the blur. The end result was indeed the same.

Good luck Doc.Hope you found how to do it. I have just been playing with it and I am sure that Christopher is right that it is possible also to do it in layers.
Actually I was feeling quite proud of myself for having mastered it and showed my husband. He said "Well it is out of focus and you could have done that just by upping the contrast and then adding gaussian blurr. I looked disdainfully at him and then tried it. Do you know what - I couldn't tell the difference. I did just sharpen it though after having applied gaussian blurr!!!

Thanks so much Chris! I was never getting quite the look I wanted in PSE4, but your layers explanation was just what I needed. Perfect.

This looks like an old thread, but for what it's worth, here's what I do for Orton, using Elements 4.0:

1. Finish up your picture, as if you're ready to post.

2. Press the CTRL and J key at the same time to bring up a duplicate layer. Then, blend them using the Screen mode. You'll see a much lighter
version. Flatten it, then save under a different file name.

3. Go back to your finished picture--from step 1. Do a Filter, Blur,
Gaussian blur. You'll see a slider bar. I usually slide it about 1/3rd
the way over. The picture will get blurry. Then, you need to brighten
the blurred picture. Just use Levels. It's subjective how much...not a
lot. Then flatten the image.

4. Now you have two images. The one from Step 2 and Step 3.

5. For the blurred image, do a Select, All, then Edit Copy.

6. Call up screened image (step 2). Then, do an Edit Paste. You should
see the blurred one now appear in a separate layer. Blend the layers
using the Multiply option. It will magically comine both images. It may
still look dark. You can change the opacitiy between the layers by
adjusting the slider bar. It defaults to 100%. Or, you can further
adjust via Levels.

That's it. The main variables are amount of blur (step 3), and amount
of brightness to give the blurred shot (step 3).

I prefer the Horton method. I sing "Sink the Bismark" and "North to Alaska" at full voice while processing photos.
