sRGB vs Adobe RGB 1998 for uploads

I recently had a conversation with a fellow photographer. He said that uploads to the web should be sRGB, but photos to be printed should be Adobe RGB 1998. Can someone confirm that? All my photos are in Adobe RGB 1998. Also, when uploading to BP does BP change the photo to sRGB?

For uploading to the web you should be using sRGB. Most web browsers don't understand color management at all, but sRGB is a standard that will show your images on the widest range of displays.

For printing, Adobe RGB is a closer match to the color range, or gamut, of the typical inkjet photo printer. That said, most online print services request that images be submitted to them in sRGB.

Im pretty sure most of the "cheaper" type labs and online services use sRGB, but if you take your images to a professional lab or similar(using pegasus or durst printers) definitely use Adobe RGB 98.

It may pay to just email or call your lab to see what printers they use and what colour spaces are appropriate.

Thanks Jon and Ben, this has been helpful. I currently print all my photos on an Epson 2400 and I have been using Adobe 1998. I just wasn't sure if I needed to switch to sRGB for uploading photos to my web page. It sounds like that is the best way to go. Thanks again for your response.
