Photography Question

s5200 fuji

Is the s5200 a good camera and can it take high quality photos?

It will be my first digital camera and I am wondering how well it would stack up against a 35mm like the olympus IS-5 as an example.Any comments welcome.

  Hi Jody,

I have a S5200. I've upgraded to the Canon 400D.

The S5200 is a really good camera to learn manual settings on. It takes great all around photographs. My only complaint is/was the macro mode leaves some room for improvement. I have a few pics in my gallery taken with it. It has all the same program modes as the far more expensive DSLRs and allows for full manual mode as well. It is very restricting as far as aperature settings. You get F3.2-F8. The zoom is nice. But don't expect to use the extra digital zoom. It is useless. Even if you use a tripod, it gives you blurry low quality pics. But the 10x is still nice. I think it comes out to roughly 300mm equivalent.

If you are looking for a starter camera to learn manual settings, it is a great "prosumer" point and shoot camera. If you are looking for more versatility than that, go for an entry level DSLR.

Hope that helps.

Don

  Ok,thanks.
I looked at your s5200 pics and they look great.
Since I'm such a noob a DSLR would be kind of a waste right now so this will be the camera for me plus the camera itself looks pretty cool to :)

I have the s5200. It's great! (And how cool it is/looks. ;) (They also have a new s5600fd, you know. And the sony h5 looks great.)

The aperture range is small, but that's not really such a big problem, especially if your just learning. I use the 10x zoom all the time, and the quality is top notch, even without a tripod, if it's a bright day. At 10x, the mm equiv. is 389mm. It's very good for learning all about manual settings.

The quality is very good. The low noise is something you don't often get in point and shoot cameras. Even at ISO 1600, the noise isn't too bad. The shutter range is terrific, too.

The 30 fps movie mode, great macro mode, "anti shake" feature, and speed of the camera are all great things. If you are going to take actual macros, you should get macro lenses. (Macro settings on almost all cameras simply lets you focus closer and aren't for true macros.) I got the HOYA set of +1 +2 and +4 and am very happy with it. You can even zoom using the macro lenses, witch is really cool.

You probably will upgrade to a slr eventually, but you are right - the s5200 is great to start with and slrs can be quite expensive, esp with the lenses.

I highly recommend it. Go for it!

P.S. You should get (55mm threaded) p-cokin polarizer filters and GND filters if you are doing landscapes, and Opteka's 70" tripod and the opteka battery set of 4 with the rapid charger are great (and important, and cheap) accessories, too.

I own the S5100 (the 5200 is the upgrade to the 5100).

I bought it as a beginner camera to all the different settings and how they work, without getting into learning all the lenses too.

Along with some great classes I took on this site, I see a big improvement in my photos, and am ready to take the next step to an SLR.

You can browse my gallery for some shots taken with the 5100 or do a search on this site for any photos taken with a 5200. Click on photos (on the toolbar), then by camera.

Hope this helps.

Sandi

I feel like you do, Sandi. At first, I really knew nothing. Now, I kind of am thinking about SLRs, but they are pretty expensive. I wish they would just put bigger sensors on the prosumer cameras and give them more advanced options. They already have good permanent lenses on the prosumers.

I also think David N from Hawaii learned a lot on his S5000, but I didn't double check.
