Photography Question

Andrew Laverghetta

business cards

I was interested on what other photographers out there use for their business cards or how they give their info out to others.

I've been doing a lot of photography for a friend from middle school who's now producing hip-hop, pop, top40 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I figure if I meet somebody during the course of this work it would always be good to have a card or at least something with me. I have wallet sized prints in my wallet all the time and recently, I tried to put together a business card but I ended up making possibly more of a web graphic.

I was thinking, what if I could print this on glossy, or metallic photo paper from mpix.com and hand these out to people who are interested. What might the problems be with this metallic true photo paper business card? The won't run because they don't use ink, they might not be as study as business cards on the edges but I'm not sure. Check it out if you can for me...

I realize the small pics on here will be VERY small on the card but I think as long as I make them look good small (with colors and contrast) they may attract people.

If you could share what kind of "business card" you use or what you might carry around with you, that would be great.

Thanks!

Design and make your own with your printer. Is the text big enough on a 2x3?

I do my own, too. Easy to do on the printer.

I use Vistaprint. It costs about $5 or so and you get about 200 business cards. You can upload your own graphic, so I went into photoshop with one of my photos and added text and designed it, then uploaded it to Vistaprint. But pay attention to where it talks about size, because if you don't get it right it will cut off part of the picture or the text. Hope this helps.

Don't have any myself, but have received them from two different photog's I've met here... Both have a glossy front, displaying one of their photos (printed edge-to-edge, full size of the business card.) They each chose photos that 1) looked good that small, 2) indicated their primary photographic interest (ie, nature, landscape etc.) and 3) left room for text placement (in a contrasting color) as well. The text is the website address and name of the shooter's business (often the same, minus the .com part.) On the back side, a short, generic model/property release text is printed, along with lines for filling in address/signature--so they can also use these cards as an on-the-spot release, when shooting in the field; the person/property owner signs one (for the shooter to keep) and also keeps one, with the shooter most likely offering to mail a print, etc...

I also use vistaprint. Mine are double-sided. On one side I have my logo and contact info while the other side has a small collage of my images.

I also purchased 2 sets of magnets, one is the back of my business card and the other is the front.

Vistaprint is ALWAYS having 80% off sails, and I just ordered a bunch of stuff for free, only had to pay shipping.

One other thought is to print postcards. I hand these out all the time. Mine are glossy on one side and flat on the back. The front has pictures and the website. The back has a bit more info. The size helps people find them faster than a business card. I guess I have an advantage of carrying a purse so I am able to keep many of these nearby vs a smaller business card. I do like what you made.

  Hello Andrew,

If you go by standard convention and what the sales & marketing people say, you should have professionally made cards if you are serious about your business.

I will say I agree with this premise.

First impressions are formed in seconds and last much longer.

Pete
