Source of light other than daylight I am taking a photography class and need to make 10 images using an alternate source of light. I cannot use daylight, tungsten light, or light from an appliance. I can use true flourescent light, light from a fire, headlights, etc. Anyone have any other ideas?! Much appreciated!!

Moon light, flash light (is this considered an appliance???), Neon sign light, fireplace, candles, Christmas tree lights, infrared light (might need a filter for this one), bounced/reflected light... Can't think of anything more. Hope that helps :-)

Thanks for the suggestions Susan. I can't use any daylight balanced source of light so no electronic flash, sunsets, sunrises or moonlight. I like the neon sign and christmas light idea though!

LOL this sure isn't easy is it? Since you can use florescent light I'd say head out to Target (or walmart) and check to see if they sell colored florescent lights. Would give you some more variations at least. How about laser light. I think you can buy small laser light pens Light from a pipe or cigarette. Do you have any lighthouses nearby? Could do a night time photo of that. But I'm not sure if that would be allowed. If I can think of anything more I'll posted it :-)

Hi Jessica, Come on now think! I think your teacher wants you to experiment with exotic light sources. What do you think of these? A. Firelight from campfire - fireplace. Have fun,

The laser light thing is a great idea. You can "paint" with it in a completely dark room.

Alan, thank you for your suggestions and for breaking them down into the source of light. I had thought of firelight, glow stick light, neon light, street lamp light, gas stove light, and LED light from my alarm clock (bright blue). I am also going to try a sparkler. I really like the flare and suntan lamp ideas, and my friend just happens to own a tanning salon... Thanks, I am well on my way! Cherylann, thanks for the suggestion! Our next class is a field trip at night for low light shooting and we are going to learn how to "paint" using a flashlight, so I will definitely give the LED idea a try.

How about a macro shot of the indicator light on your camera telling you that your battery is low? ...or any other close-up of indicator lights we see every day...(seat belts, oil pressure, etc.) It's too bad fireflies aren't around this time of year.

I really like the pattern you made with the red neon sign. I'm looking forward to see what else you create.

How about a black light??? You can get some interesting shots with a blacklight effect....
