Photographers in New York City

I am a book editor coming to New York City in October to start research on a new guidebook project.
While I'm there, I also need to take as many pics as possible using my Nikon D70... but I would love some company! Are there any locally based photographers there who would fancy meeting up?
Otherwise, does anyone know of a good New York amateur photo society that I could get in touch with?
