Photography Question

indoor sports shots

You asked about the camera used and sutter speeds. The camera is a Minolta QTsi Maxxum. The telephoto lens is minolta 75-300 AF Zoom. Everything about this camera is automatic, the only things I can change is the modes. 1) Portrait mode
2) landscape mode 3) close-up mode 4) sports mode 5) night Portrait mode.
I set the Mode to sports, and being so far away the flash will not lite the subject so we turn it off. We tried the flash, but with telephoto the eyes glow like an animal shot. We assume the sports mode would set the sutter speed to stop the image but it did not. There are no setting that you see in the view finder other then auto focus is complete and ready for the shot. The manual reads that in this mode the focusing is continual and sutter speed will stop the action.
Why doesn't it take good pictures? We use a tripod to steady for telephoto shots. This camera takes great action shots outside. Thanks for you reply

I suggest you use a film with a high ISO number -ISO 800 ( Kodak SUPRA,Fuji Press 800/1600 and others). Your camera doesn't have red-eye reduction---a big disadvantage,Lloyd. Though your Minolta is a good choice---I would recommend you use ANOTHER SLR camera for this situation----a Nikon N75 ( whose sports mode has BETTER capabilities even with the built-in Speedlite flash or an external Speedlite like the SB 28 or SB 80DX.)---when you add a 28-200mm Nikkor AF lens---it'll be NO HEADACHE!( In EBAY you can get a Nikon N75 AF body as low as $100 by now---check 'em out!)
