Photography Question

Michelle L. Hornberger

Where is the book?

I also won the photo contest! My son's picture My 1st Pumpkin is supposed to be in Endless Journeys ISBN-0-7951-5247-7. I have searched everyone where for this book on my own because I was a little leary about buying it through picture.com or whatever it is. It has been two years now. Has anyone found this book? Where? How much? I would like one!!

I believe you got mixed up in a scam. See, your book is the International Library of Photography. I'm pretty sure this is a scam. See http://www.acecam.com/photography/11079.html

Sorry, Dennis, but the book you referred to is not the one she is looking for.

Michelle, if you bought the book, you will get it - eventually. If you didn't buy the book I doubt that you will find it for sale anywhere. Likewise, I doubt your picture will be in it if you didn't buy the book.

Really? I copied her ISBN number into Amazon.com and came up with that one.

Wow thanks for all of the responses to my question. I also searched by the ISBN# and couldn't find the book. I didn't buy the book through the offer because I was very leary about the price, etc. I just want to find it on my own and buy it since my son is supposed to be in it! Thanks for everyone's help!

If you'd like to read more info on the ILP or picture.com refer to these Better Photo forums:
http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=4448
http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=12825
http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/QnAdetail.php?threadID=14647

My name is Bill Dabovich and I, too, have been taken advantage of, and I’d like to take these guys down. I’m actively working with several other BP users to gather as much information on these guys as possible. ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE EFFORT OR LEND A HELPING HAND IS ENCOURAGED TO EMAIL ME AT DabovichWilliamJ@sau.edu We need as many people as we can get, “Strength in numbers!!!” Yes, it’s great to be able to get your money back and forget that such a thing ever happened, but for those of you who’d like to help out those who are uninformed about the clever people at picture.com or poetry.com (who actually operate under 13+ company names and websites), I IMPLORE you to email me and join in taking these people out. If you happen to email me, please include something about the ILP and betterphoto.com so I do not delete your message.
Back in 2003 I entered a photograph of mine in picture.com contest, and just as many of you know, I too received the bogus letter telling me they wanted to publish my photo, but I’d have to pay for the book. I was ecstatic! This was the first contest I entered, and by golly, I won something on the first try, so I thought. Well, when I didn’t receive my book after the initial date, I received a postcard later telling me about pre-publication difficulties and that the publication was set back a few months and therefore, the distribution of the book was set back an additional few months. Well the last I’d heard I was supposed to have received the book NO LATER than 14 November 2005. Well as many of you folks know, it is now 21 September 2006.

Ok, that’s the history of my own experience. Now, here’s some background info on the company. Since 2004, I’ve spoken with and heard accounts regarding the ILP dating back to 1998. The people have been around since 1989. I’d done some research on them and found that what they do INITIALLY (by contacting you and telling you that your photo has been selected to be published but you need to pay a fee) IS in fact legal. It’s called Vanity Publishing. A vanity publisher is basically a “book printer, claiming to be a publisher. [To put it simply,] a commercial publisher’s target market is the general public; while a vanity publisher’s target market includes executives, students, and the uninformed.” Vanity publishers make their money by tricking the naïve into thinking their work is going to be sold all over the world, but they just need to pay a small fee for such a GREAT honor. Commercial publishers make their money through profits and print one’s work at the publisher’s expense. So, technically, the business practice of asking for a fee for the publication IS LEGAL, however, by constantly telling you that your book’s publication has been delayed and not sending you the item which you paid for, is borderline fraud, as well as questionable marketing strategies.

Now, onto the Better Business Bureau. This company is, also, fooling you. The BBB is NOT, let me say this again, THE BBB IS NOT a legitimate government agency. A key indicator to this is the web address ‘suffix’ (for lack of a better term.)
NOTE: The website is www.BBB.com the “.com” indicates that it’s NOT a government agency. If it WERE, it would end with “.gov”
So, you see, the BBB tricks you into thinking they’re a legitimate government agency through fancy wording and their name. On that note, the BBB has little to no authority to go after the fraudulant companies, they can only do as much as us..calling them.

Again, anyone who cares to join the effort to take down the ILP, please contact me at DabovichWilliamJ@sau.edu and we’ll work together to help prevent more ignorant photographers from being taken advantage of. Or, if you have myspace, you can contact Sheena (another BP user who's helping lead this fight against the ILP) at: www.myspace.com/sheenaneil . Thank you all so very much for your patience in reading through my exceptionally long post. Hope everyone has a great week and good luck to you all in your pursuit of photography.

Sincerely,
Bill Dabovich

P.S. Here the websites from the Better Business Bureau’s page on the International Library of Photography

Finally, Anyone who hates to wait on hold:
Their phone number is now:

It will ask, "If you know your party's 3 digit extension, you may dial it now"
dial ext. 162 = ILP head of customer service!!

I was close to being scammed by circleofphotographers.com, a site which I think is now expired, unless I just have the wrong spelling. :) I'm all for stopping these scammers, but how will emailing you help?

For us to get anything accomplished we need testimonies from people with names and emails so that we have that we didn't just make up the stories. We're planning on getting the media involved to get negative publicity for the company and with that we are looking at getting a petition. This way it looks more legitimate. So, Please if you want to help, email me with your story, or if you don't feel comfortable emailing me your story you can contact Sheena at www.myspace.com/sheenaneil

Again an update. A few days ago I got another piece of mail with the exact same print and book title and ISBN. That would be in late July of 2008. The first photo I put to picture.com was in 2005, and again in 2006. For grins I did it again in 2008. Free for me and they have to pay for the paper to send to me with my picture on it. Win/win for me! :P

Call or write your own state district attny. They are doing interstate business and, therefore, the court of the state in which any alledged incident has occurred has jurisdiction, unless an agreement has been signed that states that any legal action must take place in a specific state... however, any state judge can throw out such a clause if they wish and a state district attny would not be bound by it anyway.

Alternately, a class-action suit that crosses state lines would be in federal court's jurisdiction.
