Kelley, I received a lighting package from my husband for mother's day. He gave me a 'startup' set from AlienBees, and they are very easy for me to use. I too, use them in my home, and after just a couple trials using my family as guinea pigs, I had my first customer. The photos turned out great, the lights are easy to understand and use, and alienbees packages are relatively cheap. I suggest checking out their web site. I personally use black and white material, and black and white fleece blankets as backdrops right now, with a few sheer colored pieces of material I use a 'prop backgrounds' and the client I had had just recently had her baby's photos taken at a professional studio, and she said mine were better by far. you don't have to spend alot, just be creative. For clothes, check out thrift stores, etc.

kelly, there is a local home/garden store here that sells sheer, shiny colored...tablecloths maybe? basically material, I use them in many different ways. they are cheep and easy to switch around different backgrounds. Here's an example of the shoot I had. the green and the blue are two separate fabric things against a white backdrop. The store also has lots of fake flowers, fake fruit, etc. that are great for props. Home/garden store and craft stores are great places to find props, and they offer lots of items during different seasons, so keep your eyes peeled for Xmas stuff.
