What lights to buy for a new studio

I know this has been asked before...what kind of studio lights does one buy for a new studio? I need average priced equipment to get me started. Are photographers buying other alternatives from hardware stores to save money? I need to get started. Thanks lots.

Don't know what average price is but I'd check out Alien Bee or Britek. If you want to step up White Lightning is AB more rugged line. If your really serious then on the low end of a pro studio would be like Elinchrom or Hensel....High end Profoto oh yeah I think Dynalite is another brand in line with Alien Bee and Britek? You need a light meter as well like the Sekonic L358 with a chip.

If your budget is low you might want to look at used Norman lights on EBay. The 900 series stuff is really selling cheap on EBay. That would be the P800D, P1250D or P2000D power packs and the LH2000 & LH2400 heads. This stuff is very durable I have used it for more than 20 years. Do not get the P4000D power pack. If you have a digital camera you can get along without a light meter. You have to guess at your first exposure but you actually get more information with your cameras proof image and a histogram than you do with a meter.
Oliver suggested some god new equipment, I would also suggest the Calumet Travelites. They are a good product.
Good luck with your studio!
