Lens for Canon Rebel XT I have a canon rebel XT - can someone suggest a good general purpose lens? I currently have a 18-55 that I need to replace. I do some portrait shots as well as nature.

you gotta be little more specific, $$, what you are gonna be shooting, what you didn't like about the 18-55mm. I have 17-40L, 70-200 2.8 and just getting 24-70 2.8. theyre all great but they're expensive and heavy.

portraits and nature - landscapes etc Inexpensive and was fine with the 18-55 but it is broken and rather than replace it with the same I was wondering if there was something a bit better with close to the same range

I would rent the 17-40 or 24-70 but they in a slightly different class than the 18-55. maybe there is an IS lens with about the same focus range.

Getting my Canon EF 50mm 1:1.4 lens was the best thing I ever did. Works amazing in low light. It is about $350.00 but, I would even pay more for it. Don't get the 1.8 it is like a kit lens. Cheaper, but not worth it. That is my recommendation. I used to use a Tamron 28/300 I don't miss the zoom at all. The Canon DOF is worth the zoom trade off. Its all about the F-stop baby :)
