Nikon 12-24mm versus Tokina 12-24mm

I have a Nikon D70s and am thinking of buying a wide angle lens for my trip to Egypt. I am read a lot about Nikon's 12-24mm and the Tokina 12-24mm. There is an large cost difference between the two (Nikon-$999.00, Tokina-$499.00). But I want to find out if there is a difference in the quality of the Nikon lens (both in the construction and image quality) that justifies the cost difference?

  Look at http://kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm
He has a very good article comparing the Nikon, the Tokina, the Tamron, and the Sigma. From what I remember, Tokina was about as good as the Nikon at half the price. I have an older Tokina 100-300mm ATX and they are built as well as an expensive Nikon.
