Photography Question

Underwater Digital

We currently have a Sea & Sea DX-3100 3mp underwater camera. I wrongly assumed that setting the quality of the images from standard to fine would also increase the dpi. Apparently that's not true and the most we get is 72 dpi (in other words - garbage).

Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent underwater camera that won't break the bank? I have a Nikon-D70, but I'm not ready to risk it with an underwater housing just yet. Until we stop flooding things (so far one camera and a strobe), I won't risk my most prized possession!

Thanks!

Changing the quality setting from standard to fine does increase the detail saved in the image file. 72 dpi is a display/print setting of the software you are using to display the images.

Not true – Not true:

You have a 3.14 mega pixel camera that images @ 1536 x 2048.

Your viewing software is set to 72 dpi so the image you are looking at is a giant 21.3 inches x 28.4 inches. Set your viewing software to 300 dpi and the image will become beautiful and the dimensions will be 5.1 x 6.8 inches. If you print an 8x10 the resolution will be about 200 dpi and quite acceptable. I have seen quite good 8x10’s and even larger from a 3 mega pixel.

Read your viewing software manual. Other perhaps will post a better response.

But the main thing is “don’t despair” your equipment is quite acceptable.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was ready to pitch this thing in the trash! I really thought I had a handle on resolution, but I guess I still don't quite get it.

I wondered why PS was showing me the thing at 28 inches! :)
