What SLR body to choose?

This may be an old question with repetitive answers before, but when it comes to me, I still need your generous help.
As a beginner to learn seriously about photography, I'm thinking about buying my second SLR body, since there are more and more lens to deal with. I owned a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 for a while, and I plan to buy a slightly better one with budget of $500 at most. After going through catalog, I found Canon EOS A2 or Elan 7/7E may be good enough, and they can take my existing lens. But someone told me a Nikon N80 is better choice, since it uses different metering system. I wonder if different metering algorithm really matters, and which is better? Also among those bodies, which one do you recommend? Any other choices? How about Minolta bodies, for example the Maxxum HTsi or XTsi?
Any input is highly appreciated.

Jie

  Hi Jie,

I standing in the same situation as you are, with the choise between the N80 and the Elan 7/7E. The different metering system as I see it is that the N80 has a spot meter the Elan dosn't. I'm also getting a bit confused to witch body to choose over the two, but I'm starting to go in favor of the Elan with it's eye control.

Sincerely Martin

You already have Canon lenses, among the very best. If you are consistently getting correct exposures with the metering system you have, why change? You might become so accustomed to your camera, your favorite lens or two, and the best film for you that you will someday be able to step outside and say, "It's 1/250th at f8 kinda day". My head gets turned by latests and greatests, too, but my bank account and Henri Cartier-Bresson set me straight. The guy shot with nothing but a 50.

I have the Canon Rebel (proboably the first version made) and have been very peased with it. However, I shoot sport action shots and it was slow to keep up with my focusing requirments. I looked at both the Nikon N80 and the Canon Elan 7/7E. I chose the Canon Elan 7E (with the eye control). Canon makes GREAT lens and the have many more to choose from than Nikon. I love my Elan. The eye control is a great feature although it has taken some getting used to. I still have my Rebel and use it for a backup and often have one camera loaded with black and white and one with color film.
