You can use just about anything you like for backdrops. I have tried many different things. I have some home made ones in my gallery.

Fabric stores have sales all the time on different materials which can be used as backgrounds. As long as your subject to background distance is more than a few feet, a small aperture setting can "iron out" the wrinkles of in-expensive fabrics.
Felt materials are more expensive but easier to work with...(less wrinkles and un-wanted reflections.)

Foam-core and poster boards work well for small product photography and still-life. These can be found in a variety of colors at any office supply store.

  "canvas or muslim"

Just remember, if you put any Muslims in your background, you may need to get a signed release from them. ;-)

Sorry, I couldn't pass that one up.

Estella - just to avoid any confusion at the fabric store, the backdrop material is muslin, not muslim. Sorry for the little joke at your expense.

Greetings Estella: I think you're on the right track. Try either a paint store or Loews, or Home Depot and buy a good quality, heavy duty, painters drop cloth made out of canvas. They come in all sorts of different sizes but get one that you think you can toss in your washing machine.

Wash it once to get rid of the sizing then paint it or throw paint on it, to get it to look any way you want it to. OR, find a house painter and trade him / her the new one for a ready made, used canvas that's already painted, probably on both sides.

To hang them on location, carry a roll of gaffers tape. Much lighter than stands and just tape them up wherever you need them.

And...they just get stuffed in a canvas parachute bag for transporting.

Whaddya think??? Chris, anybody...class?? CLASS !!!! ;>)
Take it light.
Mark
