Digital Image Storage What would be your suggestion for storing digital images that are currently saved on my PC? I have over a thousand images that I've backed up to disks. Is there another way that I can save them? Someone told me about a Memory Stick. Would that be better and easier than disks? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I just went to Circuit City and got a 160GB external hard drive for $99, with a $10 rebate! It also has a 5 year warranty. It's called "My Book" but I forget who it's by. You'll know it when you see it because it looks like a little black book. I wouldn't go with a memory stick. Memory sticks just don't scream "permanence" to me. They're for portability... Go with an external hard drive, as they have gotten better and don't overheat like they used to.

So what would I do, just transfer the images to the external hard drive? Also, when I upload new images will they be uploaded like normal to my PC and also to the external? Thanks for your help!

The little thumb size USB memory drives go to a gig or more, but there's a better way. Many makers (Iomega as only one) sell a 100 gigbyte or bigger detachable hard drive. We're talkin' maybe $100-150. They plug into the computer by Firewire or USB2. You might also consider grouping your images logically and burning them to CD as a backup of the backup.

I agree with Doug. REDUNDANCY!! REDUNDANCY! It'll save your butt if one crashes, you'll have two backups! I burn mine on disk AND have them on the external drive. I have "my documents" pointed to the external drive now, so all my storage is on the external drive. Makes for a faster PC. Yes, you would just transfer all your images to the external hard drive. When you buy it and plug it into your USB , it automatically installs itself and the computer will name it, in my case "g:\mybook". I download all my files from the CF card straight there. Then, I burn all my edited final images and their raw files to cd to have another backup.

Hi Alison. Yes - I do as suggested. Get yourself a nice big external USB hard drive... (if you get a smaller one you'll just be buying another one in a few months once it's full)... When you plug it in and go searching on yoru computer it shows up as another drive and you can see all your pics directly from the drive... I agree with Sipho though - for pics that are really important to you - get yourself a dvd burner and copy to dvd's and to the external hard drive. To be sure double check the content of the dvd after copying. Then take your dvd backups and bring them over to someone else's house (or your work or somewhere in another location)...
