Photography Question

Alison Parisey

Digital Software

I was wondering what would be the best and most reasonable priced Edition of Photoshop that I could get? They range from $99-$1795 at Office Depot.
Thanks!

Elements 4.0 [available for $80 at amazon.com] has more than enough features to satisfy any amateur to advanced amateur who's not on an ego trip. It works with RAW images directly; I had to download the free plug-in for my new Canon 30D.

It lacks two features that I use in Photoshop 7.0 - Curves and Channel Mixer. One CAN live without these tools. Its more important downside is that Adobe has made changes from Version 3.0 such that many third party plug-ins can't be used with 4.0. There go the freebies.

If someone is INTO all manner of graphics as well as image editing, Photoshop CS2 is probably the way to go. At $550-800 [depending where you buy,] it's got the added capabilities but at many times the price. If you won't ever use all the features, it might be overkill and over-priced.

There are a lot of web sites out there that sell software [that they claim is legal] for ridiculously low prices. I've seen CS2 for less than $100. But, I'm not convinced these sites are really legit.

The best deal I have found is to buy a Wacom Pen Tablet that is bundled with Elements 3.0.

I got the Wacom Graphire4 4x5 USB Tablet (CTE640) from Amazon for $89.99.

So you get a tablet, pen, mouse and Elements 3 for about the same price as Elements 4!

Elements 3.0 is good enough for me at this time.

If you don't do what Marianne said (which is great, everyone should have a Wacom anyway, I have the Intuos 4x5. Just upgraded from the Graphire) then I DEFINITELY recommend Paint Shop Pro X over PSE 4. It's great, only $99 bucks (then there's a $30 mail in rebate) and has almost everything for photographs that PSCS2 has. Well, the Important things, anyway.

It's the pen and tablet to use for editing. Wacom is the brand name, Graphire and Intuos are the "model" names. These babies are GREAT. What used to take me HOURS because of the clumsiness of a mouse takes minutes!! They are worth their weight in gold. Go to www.wacom.com. I have the Intuos 4x5.
