I shoot a lot of flower photography with a Sony F828 camera and I have someone interested in ordering a 20 x 30 print of one of my flowers. The problem is, I need info. on the best place to get it printed at. Either online or in Michigan (somewhere between Auburn Hills & Lansing) Thank you in advance for your help :-)

  SnapFish (Online)

If you are a Costco member, Costco. (Order online, pick-up at Costco or have it delivered to you.)

Also, http://www.mpix.com/ .

I just got my waterfall photo (20x30) printed at mpix.com with good result.
They have 3 different shipping methods: 1st class (snail mail), USPS Priority Mail, and FedEx nest day.

Also, http://www.shutterfly.com/ $23.

Assuming the print quality and the S&H are equal, then the less is certainly better. I cannot say about the last two but I used mpix and shutterfly and I always go with mpix for better overall quality for a couple extra $'s.

Ariel & Nobi, maybe you could help with this question. I just took some pictures of a freinds wedding at 5 megapixal. If I send them online to get printed as 4 x 6's I get some heads and such that are cropped off. Is there an easier way to get these down to 4 x 6 prints other then having to go into each one and scale it down in PS? Thank you again.

You should crop the pictures down to 4 x 6 before uploading so you make sure that important stuff isn't cut off by the online computers. You can also size them to 300 DPI (which I think is 1200 by 1800 pixels for a 4 x 6) before uploading to save a little time when uploading.

Note that at least Shutterfly and SnapFish (and Costco, which is a service of SnapFish) (I don't know about mpix.com) offer like 20 or something like that free 4 x 6 prints when you sign up, so this is a perfect time to compare the different services. (If you are a Costco member, go with Costco and not SnapFish. Costco's pricing and shipping is much cheaper.)

Also note that you might have to sell SnapFish, when uploading, not to downsize your high-res picture.

Thank you, I didn't know about the sizing it up part. I will try that for future reference. I do belong to Costco and Snapfish. Maybe it is a configuration difference between my computer and online services. Because my prints say "image size 4 x 6" but they (Snapfish etc...)say that it doesn't recommend a 4 x 6 print of it for some reason. I will print a couple first to see how they turn out, and then go from there. Thanks again :-)

Snapfish must be saying that because the online version of the picture has been downsized way too much. Make sure that the file size is 1200 by 1800 pixels for a 4 by 6 crop/print and make sure that it uploads the file without downsizing. (Also, make sure that up save the crop as a DIFFERENT file from the original, as a jpeg, with the highest quality compression.)
Picasa2 makes this cropping and downsizing quick and easy. First crop it as a 4x6, and then export it (like to the desktop) with "resize to" selected at 1800 pixels and 100% jpeg compression.
Like I said, if you are a Costco member (with a member number/Costco card) upload it to Costco's photo center online. They have free shipping for small prints, I think.

  Thank you sooo much Ariel,
I understand now what I did wrong. I thought I needed to crop it as much as possible before trying to get it to a 4 x 6, which in turn lessened my pixel count. Last night I started with the original size again and just cropped it into a 4 x 6 which automatically scaled up the pixels. It went really quick. Next time I will know. Thank you again!! I love knowing that I can come to BetterPhoto and get help from wonderful people like you & Nobi :-)

www.snapfish uses very low quality paper and their prints look cheap. I Would reccomend www.winkflash.com. They are less expensive and I have always been happy with the quality of the prints. They use high quality paper and the process is similar to traditional film developing for your pictures last for a long time!

  Hi H,
Yes, I have to agree with you on the Snapfish quality. I have not been happy with the results that I have recieved from them. I will look into winkflash.com Thank you :-)

Although I cannot yet comment on the quality of the different companies' prints (though it seems Snapfish and Winkflash both use Fuji paper, but with a different printing method), I'd like to let you know that Winkflash has an unsatisfactory record on the BBB.
Costco may do better prints than Winkflash, and they are less expensive than winkflash.

Debra, did you select "Large Print Upload" when you uploaded your photos? If not, that would explain the quality. How did you size the image before uploading?

  Hi Ariel,
Thank you again for the info. Since this photo is going to be for a customer, and I have heard so many good things about them, I am going to have it done at MPIX, even though they are more expensive. Hopefully it will be worth it. I will check out Costco's printing though, first with a print for myself. And...No, I didn't use the "Large print upload" The prints that I wasn't happy with from Snapfish, had improper coloring, and others were cropped with a white border on one side. But that could be because I didn't use the correct upload. Now I know:-) Thank you again.

Maybe. I've never yet bought them when uploaded different ways to compare. Steven Gunnerson (bp member) always crops and sizes his photos for individual prints with Costco, or, for poster prints, with Snapfish, and he said he likes the quality and that there aren't white boarders.

I've started a discussion http://www.betterphoto.com/forms/qnaDetail.php?threadID=25273 to help find more opinions on the subject of who to use and it is more geared to how the different companies compare and less on specifically Snapfish and Mpix.com.

Yes, I see that. You want to feel sorry for people like that, but why waste the time...lol
I don't think that I had mentioned this but the only pics that I had done at Snapfish had been 4x6. Which had the white border and improper color. Thanks for starting that discussion, I will check it out.
