Calibration

I'm going crazy!! I have a new Dell flat screen monitor, an older P4 Dell desktop with an upgraded video card (256 meg) and a new HP color printer Model 8250. I also am learning PSCS2. I noticed that some pix I had processed didnt print out even close to what I saw on screen. I'm confused about all the different settings offered for calibration...i.e. sRGB, Adobe RGB 98 etc. I can't afford one of those monitor calibration devises at this time. Can someone please tell me a simple and straightforward way to get a closer calibration using the above described equipment and software? Also, My camera is a Canon 20D and even it has a setting choice of sRGB or Adobe RGB 98. So much interaction with all this equipment!! Any help much appriciated!!

Terry

Although I'm sure that some of the firms making calibration systems for monitors will say I'm wrong . . . I just read a section of Photoshop Elements 4.0 -The Missing Manual. A reall ygreat book for us PSE 4 users.

Unfortunately, the author indicated there were MAJOR issues in trying to calibrate flat screen LCD monitors. I know Adobe GAmma DID not work at all with my 19 LCD and it took much massaging just to bring it back to a usable state.
