Offensive?

Hate to be a pest but I really need some constructive critism on a figure study in my gallery. I don't want to offend.

It's not offensive at all, but the shadowing on the face is distracting. You were referring to the one titled Figure, correct?

Yes I was..Thank-you for responding so quickly. I didn't know if it would offend anyone. I know this is a family oriented website. The shadowing was intentional..I was trying to draw attention to the body shape instead of the face. Thank-you for your critique.

I don't see it as offensive but it does look terrible underexposed. It is very gray. It may be from your B&W conversion method too.

Using shadowing on the face to draw attention to the body is good, but I'd prefer a more "solid" shadow that wasn't "blotchy". :) Otherwise, yes, it's a good technique to move the eye to the actual subject you want to show.

Thank-you all for your advice and honesty. My photography style is a little unusual and I like to use alot of darkness and shadow. Alot of people do comment on my dark and mysterious images. Glad I didnt affend anyone.

Kerry L. Walker   I guess I'm the odd man out, as usual.

First, I don't find the image offensive at all. Now, if I posted an image of myself on the beach in a bathing suit, that would be offensive! Probably would bring out the "Save the Whales" crowd!

Second, I LIKE the image. I find it very artistic.

Jagadeesh Andrew Owens   I love darkness and shadows as well!! Love 'em! But I think the shadow on the face could be more even on the right side. If it were me, I would burn (or fill) the highlight beneath the eye on the righthand side of the portrait to make the shadow even on that side of the face.

I do not take offence to the photo, but I think it is on the gray line of should it be on this site. And because of that, I think you should remove it. Doc

No Stacey, I do not believe you need to remove this photo, it is perfectly fine, Now if you had posted it on Sesame Street.com then maybe you would have a problem with it.

Just cause a photo may not be liked by some doesn't make it offensive. The lady is wearing undies and has her breasts covered.

Actually Dr S, I find your clown photo freaky and a bit un-nerving. But it doesn't mean it should be removed.

My notes on the photo:

Definiately under exposed, the highlighted areas are not light enough and do not show detail.

Photo is very soft, or out of focus, or maybe it was just the way it was uploaded. I would go for a smaller aperture next time, set the camera on a tripod and ask your model to not breath for a second or two! he he.... Maximum results are always achieved with smaller apetures (ie f22) and longer exposures. Less room for exposure error.

I hope this helps, and have fun!

Thank you for the laugh today Natalie. Sometimes I find my face a bit un-nerving. I deal with kids and I hear of people you let their kids view this site. And if the photo is not all right for Sesame Street, then why here. The is for family. The question was asked and I gave my thoughts. And the great thing is that you where able to give your thoughts and I think that is cool.

And I agree with what you said about the photo.

So bump a nose and have some fun. :O)

I am so glad everyone likes my photo...expressing myself with shadows is something I love to do. I do agree with it being a little grey, but I have printed this photo and it looks fine on paper. Don't understand that one at all. I will try the fill next time..a little less shadow around the eye would help lessen the distraction. I think you all are great for looking at my gallery and I thank-you for your critique...and I really don't care for clowns but it's a nice colorful shot.

on figure 2, I would have either shown the whole tattoo or ps'd it out.. on figure, there is absolutely nothing offensive about this study, but somehow the hand doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the figure.. either the angle, the shadows or something make it look wrinkled.. I also like the way you utilize the shadows..

Thank-you Dr.S, I really appreciate those kind words. Redheads have all the fun! Brigitte...your right, her hand looks somewhat funky..next time I will try a different angle or lighting. I do appreciate the critique..it helps me improve and thats what I want to do. Thanks again.

Samuel..LOL! You made my day..I just don't know if I want my bare essentials photographed yet. I would rather take images of someone else, but I thank-you for the offer. By the way I love your gallery, Very beautiful. Brigitte..I have seen several peoples' responses come through sometimes 4 or 5 times. I don't understand that one. I think your lunar moth would make a great tattoo. We only have a couple reputable tattoo artists in my area...and I want to design my own tattoo. (I do alot of artwork also). I will probably have to travel to get the one I want.

Something else to consider when photographing tattoos--sometimes the tattoo artists are looking for pictures of their work to add to portfolios or use for display to draw customers. I have a local tattoo artist who wants me to photograph some of his work so he can submit it to various tattoo mgazines--he says alot of tatoo artists would like to see their work published, but it doesn't matter how beautiful their work is if they can't get a picture of it that looks great, nobody wants to print it their magazine!
