Partial Metering Wonder if someone can clear something up for me. It seems at the moment the more a learn about the art of taking photos the more questions I have. Anyway my question is about partial metering and my Canon 350d. If I select the AF point (not the one in the centre) will the metering be read of that or off the centre point still? If its still off the centre point how do I take a reading off something which isn't in the centre of the view finder or is it a simple case of moving the camera then moving it back again?

In higher level EOS cameras, partial metering can be tied to the active focus sensor. In the Rebel XT partial metering is read at the center only. If you want to meter something off center you have to move the camera to center that subject you want to meter. If you want to meter off one element but focus on another, then set C.Fn-04 = 1 so that AF is activated with the * thumb button on the back, and metering is done with a half-press of the shutter button.

Thanks Jon for that answer. You seem to be the man in the know when it comes to meter readings and I am grateful for your answer but being new to my 350d what do you mean by "If you want to meter off one element but focus on another, then set C.Fn-04 = 1 so that AF is activated with the * thumb button on the back". Thanks

It's an alternative to using the * button (upper right of the camera's back) as AE-Lock. Using Custom Function 04 one can move autofocus activation and metering to separate controls so that they can be done independently.

Again Jon thanks very much for your advice. I will try your ideas out.

also, what I do is meter where I want to meter with the * button (for partial (central circle) metering, and then recompose since the exposure will be locked, autofocus where I need to, and then take the photo. So, the buttons are --* button meters where you want I just offered this up because I dont' like using anything other than the shutter button to autofocus.
