Photography Question
Jagadeesh Andrew Owens

Inspiration hit me today on a long drive home from somewhere I couldn't pronounce (it's like that here in Alabama sometimes...). I am a huge animal lover, a person who loves to volunteer (but can't at the shelters, because quite honestly, the one time I walked into one I couldn't stop crying, yeah, sissy me), and I'm a person who loves photography. Well, how to marry these loves, you ask?? Go to the local animal shelter and offer to take great shots of the animals for adoption!! I've never, EVER seen a good picture of a dog or cat for adoption here, and though I am a fledgling photographer, I do have a good eye. Plus, there's the camera between me and the animals, so a little insulation for my emotions! PLUS, I'd be doing a great, great thing. If you love animals, and I KNOW you love photography, or you wouldn't be reading this, then think about volunteering some of your time a few hours a month and try to get some great animals some even greater homes using your camera. There, that's my spiel.

Sincerely folks,
S. Andrew Owens (card carrying member of the ASPCA)

Jagadeesh Andrew Owens   Forgot to mention that it would be great "practice" and time with the camera....

Excellent idea!! I wish we HAD an animal shelter. We have to depend on volunteers to foster dumped animals, who are many times sick and mangy. It's a mess! Check out this poem that appeared in our local Bargain Shopper. It's by a lady named Kathy Flood who has since moved:

A dog sits waiting in the cold autumn sun,
Too faithful to leave, too frightened to run.
He's been here for days now with nothing to do,
But sit by the road, waiting for you.
He can't understand why you left him that day.
He thought you and he were stopping to play.
He's sure you'll come back and that's why he stays.
How long will he suffer? How many more days?
His legs have grown weak: his throat's parched and dry.
He's sick now from hunger and falls with a sigh.
He lays down his head and closes his eyes.
I wish you could see how a waiting dog dies.

Jagadeesh Andrew Owens   That's so sad, and true. I just wish I knew how many people were actually reading this and taking it to heart (the post). I know it doesn't necessitate a response, but that's the only way I can tell if my idea is getting out there! Let's pray that it is!

Jagadeesh Andrew Owens   LOL @ Brady! But as much as I love some people, thi others aren't worthy of the oxygen they're breathing! Especially when it comes to animals, especially here in the south. This is still the land of "let's not neuter or spay them, pull out the disposable camera to catch them humping, let them eat grass if they're sick, and when we're tired of them drive them off into the country and speed off". I kid you not. By the way, I hope no one thinks that I work for the ASPCA or some shelter and that's why I posted... Just a genuine concern and love for animals.

Sipho .... great idea! If I ever have time in the future I'll definitely consider that

(sorry, I don't have time to do everything that is important to me right now ... I'm just trying to survive while doing school and balancing a family)

I like to see ideas for using photography to help others rather than just for fun and money. Thanks!
